We reported earlier that Mercedes-Benz had revealed the GLA compact SUV before its official debut at the Shanghai Auto Show 2013. Now, the production version of the Merc Concept GLA has been unveiled at the Auto show. It has been the show-stopper at the Shanghai Motor Show, and it is expected to go on sale by the early next year. The crossover is based on the company's MFA (Modular Front Architecture) platform, and the same platform is being used in latest A-Class, B-Class and the CLA saloon.

The crossover has an overall dimensions 4383mm long, 1978mm wide and 1579mm high, and the wheelbase of the concept has not revealed yet. Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover will compete against the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Range Rover Evoque. Mercedes’ sales and marketing chief, Joachim Schmidt, describes the GLA’s role in the compact SUV segment as “a sporty and more coupé-like evolution of this category of vehicle”. The company's compact SUV to appeal younger customers, rather than the Merc traditional models preferred by business class.

The front grille of the car features a two horizontal slat-bars, which also adorns the company's stylish badge at its centre. The front headlights looks stylish and comes with a laser beam projectors that acts as headlights in the first appearance, which can also project pictures controlled via interior Command Online infotainment system. The GLA crossover is likely to be powered by the same engine that also powers the other MFA based products. The compact SUV is expected to house a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which might be tuned to offer wide range of powers from 122bhp to 211bhp, and a diesel engine of the same capacity generating 170bhp. The engine will be coupled to a seven-speed, dual-clutch, automatic transmission, and it is likely to be a four-wheel drive version.  The company however, hasn't disclosed much of its features, it seems like the GLA crossover will share most of its components from the company's A-Class hatch, B-Class tourer and the CLA sedan to keep costs in check. The car is likely to be launched in India to take on Audi Q3 and BMW X1, expected to be priced under Rs. 25 lakh.
