Mercedes-Benz has achieved yet another feat. The German carmaker’s new E-Class has been awarded with an environmental certificate from the South German Technical Inspection Authority for exemplary reduction in CO2 emissions.

Mr Anke Kleinschmit, chief of research and chief environmental officer of the Daimler Group, said that the company not only aims to follow the legal norms for the environment but also strives to go beyond that. "We analyse the environmental compatibility of our models throughout their entire life cycle – from production, through their long years of service, to recycling at the end of their useful lives. That analysis goes far beyond the legal requirements. For our aim is products which are particularly environmentally friendly in their market segment. As a result, the E-Class has received the Environmental Certificate from the South German Technical Inspection Authority,” he was quoted as saying.

Mercedes controls the environment-friendliness of the car not only while it is on the road but also during its production process. CO2 emissions for the E220d are monitored from the time the company starts manufacturing it to the time the vehicle has covered 2,50,000 kilometres and is in the process of being recycled. The car emits 3.9 litres of CO2 per 100 kilometres which comes out to be 39ml per kilometre. Now compare it with emissions from models like C200 Coupe and C300 Coupe. The former releases 51ml, while the latter emits 56ml of CO2 per kilometre. This is at least 30 per cent more than the E220d’s emissions.

The reduction in pollutants is a result of excellent deliberations made by the company. Mercedes employed a nine-stage automatic transmission in the car, chose the best aerodynamic design for it and reduced the weight of the same by carefully selecting the material to be used inside. All of these combined have yielded the desired results for the automaker.
