XUV500 W6 Review
After a gap of four years, Indian auto major Mahindra and Mahindra has launched the facelifted version of its premium SUV. Initially, there were only four variants available in this series, but now, the company has increased its portfoilo to six. Currently, this model series is available in six variants among which, Mahindra XUV 500 W6 is the mid range variant. It is powered by the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, whose fuel economy is said to be increased to a maximum of 16 Kmpl. This variant has various innovative functions including voice recognition system, glass embedded antenna and a monochrome infotainment system with 6-inch color display. This vehicle gets a brand new radiator grille with chrome accents on it. Its bumper also get a new design and is housed with a modified fog lamp console. Coming to the insides, it gets a new dual tone color scheme, which is accentuated by an Icy Blue lounge lighting that renders a fresh new look to the cabin. In terms of features, it gets an 8-way adjustable driver's seat along with a fully automatic temperature control unit and smart rain sensing wipers. This vehicle also gets an advanced ABS with EBD that enhances its braking mechanism. It is now positioned against the likes of Renault Duster, Tata Safari Storme and others in the premium SUV segment.
Exteriors:
This refurbished version gets a bolder and aggressive front facade, thanks to the updated radiator grille that has glossy black vertical slats with a lot of chrome accents. They are further accompanied by a chrome appliqué along with the company's logo that gives a classy look to this facet. The front bumper gets a new design with a black colored perforated air dam in it. The sporty look the front is further complimented by the metallic lower cladding fitted to the bumper. The side profile of this variant remained to be unchanged and it comes with body colored ORVM caps and door handles. This mid range trim gets conventional steel rims fitted with full wheel covers. The rear profile too remains to be similar as its predecessor and it gets a black colored tailgate appliqué with brand's logo embedded on it. The rear bumper has a dual tone color scheme and it is also fitted with a metallic cladding under it. However, the attractive aspect of this facet is its taillight cluster, which is housed with conventional lighting system. This 2015 version is now available with seven exterior paint options among which, Sunset Orange and Pearl White are the two new shades.
Interiors:
In terms of interiors, this updated trim gets a refined beige and black color scheme, which is further complimented by Icy Blue lounge lighting scheme. There is no update given to the interior design, but addition of equipments gives a fresh new look to the cabin. The dashboard also gets the dual tone color scheme and is highlighted by metallic accents given on steering wheel and AC vents. The cockpit section is now fitted with an 8-way adjustable driver's seat that enhances the driving comfort. All the seats of this variant are covered with premium fabric upholstery. The company has also given chrome plated scuff plates to the first and second rows that are embedded with models lettering. This is a seven seater SUV model that has ample about of space for the occupants inside. At the same time, there are several utility aspects provided inside like drink holders, accessory power sockets, reading lamps and conversation mirror.
Engine and Performance:
This mid range variant is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that is incorporated with a fifth generation variable geometry turbocharger. This four cylinder engine has a common rail fuel injection system that helps to enhance its power output and fuel economy. This 2179cc engine has the ability to produce a power of 140bhp at 3750rpm that results in a pounding torque output of 330Nm in between just 1600 to 2800rpm. The manufacturer claims that its fuel economy has been improved to about 16 Kmpl, which is 1 Kmpl more than its predecessor. Torque output is distributed to the front wheels through a six speed manual transmission gearbox.
Braking and Handling:
There is no update given to the braking mechanism and it continues to have an advanced disc braking mechanism on all four wheels. They are further equipped with anti lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution that is helpful to reduce the risk of skidding on slippery roads. This vehicle gets an independent suspension mechanism, which is essential for any off-road capable vehicle. Its front axle gets McPherson strut and the rear one gets multi-link type of suspension. Furthermore, they are also incorporated with anti-roll bars, which helps to provide a smoother traveling experience.
Comfort Features:
This is a mid range variant that has several essential comfort features like fully automatic temperature control unit, tilt adjustable power steering, premium fabric upholstery, electrically adjustable outside mirrors and 8-way adjustable driver's seat. Beside these, this trim also has a multi-functional steering wheel, power windows, remote tailgate opening function, flip-key with remote central locking facility, conversation mirror, rear window demister and a large glovebox with laptop holder. This trim is also blessed with a monochrome infotainment system featuring a 6 inch color display. It has features like USB port, an integrated music system and a CD player. It also has Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calls and audio streaming.
Safety Features:
Although, it is the mid range variant, it has a slew of crucial safety features, which safeguards all the occupants inside. The list includes a dual front airbags, anti lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution system, tubeless radial tyres, crumple zones for crash protection and side impact protection beam. This is the first Indian vehicle to have a monocoque body structure, which is lightweight and tough enough to deal with the impact caused in case of an accident.
Pros:
