Delhi government, after coming under heavy criticism for ‘not’ understanding the practicality of odd/even car ban, has roped in 4,000 buses to bolster public transportation. It has tied up with Delhi Contract Bus Association (DCBA) which will now provide 4,000 buses for public use.

"We had a meeting with the members of Delhi Contract Bus Association (DCBA) in the Secretariat following which details have been prepared. Around 4000 extra buses will be on the roads between January 1-15 and they will be all CNG buses. To chalk out the details of the proposal, a committee has been formed," said Gopal Rai, Minister of Transportation for Delhi Government. He also said that government is in talks with private schools too, if their buses can be put for public use. The buses will be run under Delhi Transport Communication (DTC).

Delhi government, 6 days ago, announced an unprecedented ban on cars in Delhi. Cars with odd numbered registration plate can only run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while the even numbered ones on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday under the new scheme. Sundays will be exempt from the rule and the ban will be applicable from 8am to 8pm. Moreover, there are speculations that women travelling alone will get an exception under this yet to-be-made law. Declaration on ban came as a prompt response to a Delhi high court ruling which compared living in Delhi to living in gas chambers. The Delhi government has clarified that the ban will be tested for a period of 15 days and further decision will be taken seeing the response thereafter.
