With oodles of space and style, MG’s newest SUV has become the family vehicle to beat in India

Certain wishes are forever bound to the proverbial wishlist. For an Indian car owner, such a wish revolves around a vehicle that is equally at home during weekday commutes and weekend getaways, day in and day out. However, that wish can now be safely crossed out courtesy of MG’s newest offering, the Hector Plus. Here’s why the SUV’s plus-sized feature list makes it stand out among Indian family vehicles.

Size Plus Design

Vehicles that seat six people have no business looking as good as the MG Hector Plus. In fact, they never did and routinely offered uninspiring designs that wouldn’t merit even a first glance. Arrive in the Hector Plus, however, and you’re sure to be besieged by admiring glances from pedestrians and car owners alike.

That’s primarily because of the Hector Plus’s large proportions that slot it squarely into full-blown SUV territory. The plus-sized grille, beefy bumpers, larger LED DRLs compared to the Hector SUV, roof rails, and skid plates play their part in making this people mover look anything but… a people mover!

Plus(h) Interiors and Space

At 4720mm long and 1835mm wide, the Hector Plus is among the largest in its segment. This shows when you step… err… walk into the SUV. The additional 65mm length over the Hector has allowed the Hector Plus to offer a third row with seating space for two. That MG means business with the third row is apparent when you consider it gets dedicated AC vents with fan speed control, height adjustable headrests, and USB ports.

That said, there’s a good chance you might have family members or friends fighting over the Hector Plus’ second row, where a set of captain seats with a full recline function and individual armrests make it the next best thing to your bedroom.

But if you’re someone who prefers to drive over being driven, the Hector Plus’s pilot seat is the place to be. The humongous glass area offers a commanding view of the road ahead while the information-laden 7-inch MID makes steering the Hector Plus an enjoyable affair.

Plus Technology

If there’s one area where the Hector Plus steals a march, or rather a marathon, over family vehicles in India, it’s technology. The SUV’s centrepiece is a massive 10.4-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system that lets you control functions such as pairing your phone via Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, playing your favourite songs/radio stations, and navigating via live maps, among others.

MG raises the stakes further by offering the Hector Plus with its landmark i-SMART internet suite, turning the SUV into a four-wheeled version of your smartphone. Powered by an inbuilt eSIM, the i-SMART technology connects the Hector Plus to the internet for a host of services including preloaded entertainment content, voice commands, and Find My Car. The suite also lets you control bits like the AC, doors, sunroof, lights, and horn from afar through MG’s mobile app installed in your phone.

In true MG style, these technology features are also quite practical and make everyday life easier. For instance, MG’s foot-activated Smart Swipe feature lets you open the SUV’s tailgate by simply swiping your feet under it, a handy feature to have especially when both your hands are full.

Engines Plus Hybrid

A major part of the credit for what makes the Hector Plus such a versatile family SUV goes to its engine options. In its BS6 petrol avatar, the Hector Plus pumps out 143PS and 250Nm of torque, making it an able workhorse for city streets as well as four-lane highways. But if you like your torque lower down the rev range and call the highway your second home, MG has you covered with its 2-litre BS6 turbocharged diesel engine that puts out 170PS and a huge 350Nm of twisting force.

The MG Hector Plus is also the only SUV in its class to offer a mild-hybrid petrol mill option, making it an apt choice for those who put their environmental commitments on par with their personal ones.

Plus Safety

Features and space aside, the most must-have attribute for a family vehicle is safety. The Hector Plus comes up trumps here as it offers a fleet of safety tech as standard. This includes dual front airbags, ESP, TCS, Hill Hold Control, ABS + EBD + Brake Assist, a reverse parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and speed warning alert.

Minus Compromise

Until now, the wish for an ideal family vehicle in India could only be fulfilled by arriving at a compromise. The Hobson’s choice was between space and styling, safety and price, eco-friendly and powerful, tech-laden and accessible, and design and utility. With the Hector Plus, MG has turned that status quo on its head and set a new benchmark that Indian family vehicles will now be judged by.

And with a strong dealer network present across India, the marque British carmaker has ensured the new Hector Plus reaches as many families as possible.
