Hexa highlights

Aug 09, 2017: Tata launched the Hexa in the beginning of 2017. The Hexa is Tata's second attempt at the premium UV space and it's priced competitively to take on the likes of Mahindra XUV500, Toyota Innova Crysta and the Jeep Compass. Like all its competitors, the Hexa’s prices are also expected to go up soon due to a new proposal by GST Council. Read about it in detail here.

The Tata Hexa is loaded with features such as projector headlamps, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED taillamps and a 10-speaker JBL audio system among others. It gets the 2.2-litre VARICOR diesel engine with either 150PS/320Nm (for the base XE variant) or 156PS/400Nm on tap. While the one with the lower state of tune is available with a 5-speed manual, the latter can be had with a 6-speed manual as well as a 6-speed automatic. It's available in a total of six variants - XE, XM, XMA, XT, XTA and XT 4x4. The top-end XT 4x4 is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. Post GST, the Tata Hexa falls in the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 16.5 lakh price range.

Tata Hexa review

Tata's second shot at the premium SUV space - the Hexa - has been launched on January 18, 2017, with prices ranging between Rs 11.99 lakh and Rs 17.49 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The Tata Hexa is now the carmaker's flagship model and has a lot riding on its massive shoulders. The Hexa looks modern, is loaded with features and is offered with a 4x4 as well. But can the new Hexa help Tata establish as a premium carmaker in the minds of the Indian car buyer and wipe off the sour aftertaste of the Aria?

Things We Like in Hexa

  • Polished 6-speed automatic transmission makes city driving and highway cruising a breeze.
  • Features. Leather-feel upholstery, 10-speaker JBL audio system, all-row air conditioning - the Hexa gets it all.
  • Looks. The Hexa's Impact design philosophy has transformed the Aria into something you'd make way for.
  • Optional four-wheel drive makes the Hexa capable off-road. Will go places MPVs can only dream of.

Things We Don't Like in Hexa

  • Fit and finish on the inside could have been better in certain areas.
  • The clutch pedal has an abrupt bite point and takes some getting used to.
  • The six-speed manual gearbox isn't sure slotting and feels heavy to use. Vibrates a fair bit too.
  • No 4x4 + automatic combo on offer. Top-end XT 4x4 is available only with a 6-speed manual transmission
  • Steering feels slightly vague while tracking straight. Requires corrections to keep it in line at triple digit speeds.

Stand Out Features

  • 'Super Drive' modes lets one choose between Auto, Comfort, Rough Road and Dynamic on the fly. It works flawlessly and does what the dial says.

  • 19-inch alloy wheels look lip-smackingly good and are two sizes larger than its closest rival - the XUV500.

  • Gamut of safety features include 6 airbags, traction control, hill assist and a lot more.

CarDekho Verdict

The new Hexa is definitely a huge step up compared to the Aria. It will take on the likes of the Mahindra XUV500 and also slug it out with the lower variants of the Toyota Innova Crysta.

"The new Hexa from Tata is a compelling product and, at the current price point, we think it is a well-rounded, value-for-money offering."
