Renault Scala Review
The Renault Scala is a badge-engineered car i.e like the Volkswagen Vento-Skoda Rapid and Renault Pulse-Nissan Micra duos, it’s essentially the same car as the Nissan Sunny, with some design and packaging differences. The Scala has the same selling points as the Sunny, albeit in a classier looking package. So is it worth considering?
Verdict
While the Scala is a Nissan Sunny at its essence, it is priced at a premium. However, that’s only because it has fewer variants. For e.g, the base Scala, while more expensive than the equivalent
Even the top-end diesel variant is better value than an equivalent Sunny. However, it misses out on the option of a petrol automatic, nor is the petrol offered in the top-end grade.
The Scala is a great car for point A to B transport and has just about enough creature comforts. It’s also spacious enough for the whole family and even makes sense if you want a second car in the family for daily errands (read: For buyers who already have a luxury car in their garage). It’s also a good buy for fleet owners. Just don’t expect it to make a statement or invite your neighbour’s envy.

Things We Like
- Dual airbags, ABS with EBD and adjustable front/rear headrests offered as standard.
- Fantastic cabin space makes it a great car for 5 occupants.
- Comfortable seats, easy ingress, rear AC vents and smooth ride quality. Ideal for chauffeur-driven owners.
- Good interior fit and finish quality.
- Accommodating 490-litre boot offers enough space for the whole family’s luggage.
Things We Don't Like
- Car feels outdated when compared to its rivals.
- Petrol engine offers average mid-range and top-end performance.
- Diesel engine doesn’t get the option of an automatic transmission. Petrol automatic discontinued too.

Renault Scala Car Latest Update
July 19, 2017: Renault India has stopped the production of Scala sedan in India. It was available with petrol and diesel engine options. Where the petrol-fed 1.5-litre powerplant produced 99PS of power and 134Nm of torque, the 1.5-litre diesel engine generated 86PS of power and 200Nm of torque. Both the engines were mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
