Maruti Swift Review

Overview

It is only a few months ago, when Maruti Swift hatchback series received a new variant in the form of 'LXi Option'. Now, just a few days ahead of the upcoming launch of Ertiga MPV, MSIL has rolled out an exclusive version in this hatchback series to stay in the news. It is christened as 'Swift Glory Edition' and is being offered on VXi and VDi variant platform. Among these, the VDi trim additionally gets anti lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and brake assistance as standard. However, these versions haven't got the important dual front airbags. This glory edition gets a range of exterior and interior styling features making it very striking to look. This latest version is in white body color with red roof, coupled with racing stripes. Also, it gets red colored skirts all round the body, complimenting its exhilarating appeal. As for the insides, it gets a dual tone red and black colored upholstery for seats, a cover for steering wheel along with gear knob and new set of floor mats. The manufacturer has also added Bluetooth enabled audio system with steering mounted audio controls. Besides these, all the other facilities have been retained from the existing V grade versions.

This premium hatch, like other vehicle, is available with two engine options. One is the 1.2-litre petrol motor, which is capable of giving away 20.4 Kmpl mileage. The other one is the 1.3-litre diesel power plant that can deliver an impressive mileage of 25.2 Kmpl. This hatchback series recently gets a minor cosmetic tweak with a redesigned bumper featuring pronounced air dam and silver inserts on fog lamp console. Apart from this, it gets a new honeycomb radiator grille with newly designed alloy wheels. In addition to these, this model series was also made available with three new exterior paints including Mysterious Violet, Granite Grey and Fire Red. Its interiors too have been changed with an improved color scheme, which is emphasized by sporty silver accents. The seats have been tweaked with improved support for back and thighs. As far as its comforts are concerned, the entry level trim is available with split folding rear bench seat that is incorporated with a couple of adjustable headrests. While the mid range trims now have a music system and electrically adjustable outside mirrors. In terms of safety aspects, its mid range trim has been blessed with the proficient anti lock braking system along with EBD as a standard fitment. This refurbished range is placed against the likes of Toyota Etios Liva, Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto Evo and Ford Figo in the Indian automobile market. It is being offered with a standard warranty period of 24 months or 40,000 kilometers, which can be extended at an additional cost.

Maruti Swift Exterior

Exteriors

Its only a few months ago, when this model series got an update to its styling in the form of updated bumper and fog lamp console. Now, this newly added Glory Edition takes its elegance to a new heights with sporty features affixed to its insides and exteriors. As we can see that this new version gets a white colored body accompanied by red painted roof. Also, lower section of all the facets have red colored skirts adding more fire to its bold stance. We can also see the racing stripes on the bonnet, sides and the rear section that elevates its sporty silhouette. These updates are given only to the versions based on its 'V' trims, while the others remains to be the same. Like mentioned above, this hatchback series has received minor cosmetic updates to its exteriors, just a few months back. The radiator grille with a honeycomb mesh and embedded it with Suzuki's logo can be seen. Its headlight cluster has been retained from outgoing model and is decked with halogen lamps and turn indicators. The front bumper gets a new design and a pronounced air dam, which gives it a sporty look. Its fog lamp consoles have been decorated with silver stripes that accentuates the front facade. The side profile too gets stylish alloy wheels, which are embedded with company's badge. However, its base and mid range have a set of steel rims featuring full wheel caps. Its window frames along with A and B pillars are garnished in black, while the door handles and ORVM caps are painted in body color. Its wing mirrors are embedded with side turn blinkers. The rear profile remains mostly identical to the outgoing model with a concave tailgate and clear lens taillight cluster. Its rear bumper now has parking sensors, which is the only change that we can notice. It also has a rear spoiler with third brake lights and an antenna. However, most of these are available for the top end only.

Then its height reaches about 1530mm, whereas its minimum ground clearance is a good 170mm, which allows it to tackle any terrain with ease. Its wheelbase is at an comfortable 2430mm. It has a compact turning radius of close to 4.8 meters, which makes it easier to maneuver in heavy traffic.

Interiors

Editor's take : The Swift had boosted the sales of Maruti Suzuki since its launch and the new-generation is simply a great step ahead of the outgoing version. The interiors of the new Swift aren’t just better in quality and feel, but Maruti Suzuki has also introduced various new bells and whistles in it. The black styling is also good and the second row is spacious, however the boot of the Swift isn’t that large.

The new Glory Edition gets a new red and black colored upholstery for seats. The steering wheel cover and the floor mats also have red inserts, emphasizing its exclusivity. Additionally, the floor mats have Glory Edition lettering embedded on them that emphasizes its exclusivity. The remaining variants continue to have the same design with elegant wraparounds and extensive metallic inserts. Its seats have an ergonomically structured with better thigh and back support. The base bones are also available with 60:40 split folding rear bench seat including adjustable headrest, which extra storage. Its top end is blessed with a multi-functional steering wheel, which adds to the driver's comfort. However, the newly introduced Glory Edition also gets this facility as part of the offering. The dashboard has been retained from its outgoing model, but it is now decorated with a lot of silver accents, which gives a magnificent look to the cabin. It has several utilities inside the cabin like drink holders, accessory socket, dual front sun visors and a lot of storage space.

Interior Comfort:

There are well cushioned seats which provide good comfort and support. The 60:40 split folding facility for the rear seat allows to bring more luggage inside. It has electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors with turn indicators that allow changing view without opening the windows. There are all four power operated windows available in the high end, while the LXI Option has front alone. It has a tilt adjustable steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls mounted on it. It includes a few storage spaces like cup holders, front seat back pockets, door trim pockets, rear parcel shelf, ticket holders, console box and a few more. The rear adjustable head restraints and driver seat height adjustment facility adds to the convenience. The top end has automatic climate control that assists to maintain the temperature inside. While there is a manual air conditioning unit installed in others. The center console is fitted with a music unit in mid and high end that possess best in-car entertainment. This list includes lane change indicator, electro magnetic back door opener, remote fuel lid opener, remote locking with push start button, reading light ect.., to its quotient.

It is very roomy with elegant interiors with a front head room of 1000mm, rear head space of 910mm, shoulder room of 1290mm with a maximum rear knee space of 855mm and a minimum of 625mm (min). It has a leg room of 1150mm (max) and 690mm (min), which is quite decent. Storage compartments like a large glove box, a parcel shelf and a good luggage space at the rear are present.

Maruti Swift Gear

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Editor's take : The acceleration of the new Swift is improved and it is better than before. Even though the old car had good acceleration, and this is with the enhanced drivability of the diesel.

The car maker has paired both the versions with a five speed manual transmission gearbox. Its petrol line-up have the ability to zoom towards the 100 Kmph speed mark from a standstill in about 14 seconds and achieve a top speed in the range of 150 to 155 Kmph. Its oil-burners can reach a top speed of approximately 160 Kmph, while breaking the 100 Kmph speed barrier in about 15 to 16 seconds.

Engine and Performance

Editor's take : The performance of the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre oil burner are good and the engine doesn’t feel out of steam, even when taken on a highway. The engines have sufficient power in the city and even for the open road.

All the petrol trims are equipped with a slightly refined 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine that has a multipoint fuel injection system. It is based on a DOHC valve configuration with 4-cylinders and 16-valves that displaces 1197cc. This power plant can now produce a maximum power of 83.1bhp at 6000rpm and can generate an improved torque output of 115Nm at just 4000rpm. The diesel trims are embedded with the same 1.3-litre Multijet motor, whose engine control unit (ECU) has been modified. This 1248cc drive-train is based on the same DOHC valve configuration like its petrol counterpart with 4-cylinders and 16-valves. It has a turbocharger, which allows it to produce a maximum power of 74bhp at 4000rpm with a hammering torque output of 190Nm at just 2000rpm. Both mills have been mated with a sophisticated five speed manual transmission gearbox, which sends the torque output to the front wheels.

Maruti Swift Mileage

Mileage

Editor's take : The fuel efficiency of the Swift petrol and diesel has always been good, and the same trend is carried forward in the new generation as well, however the results in the real world aren't as good as the old diesel engine. A new base model has been introduced in the Swift diesel, called as XDi.

Petrol range are equipped with a slightly tweaked K-series petrol motor that has a multi point fuel injection technology. It can now give away a maximum mileage of 20.4 Kmpl (as per ARAI certification). Oil-burners too get an updated ECU and as a result of this, it can now produce a peak mileage of 25.2 Kmpl, which is rather good.

Power of Maruti Swift

Editor's take : The power of the Swift has been good and now both the engines are tuned for better drivability. The turbo lag on the diesel has been reduced to a great extent.

Its petrol line comprises of 4-cylinders based on a DOHC valve configuration. This produces slightly less power of 83.1bhp, but the torque output has gone up to 115Nm. Its 4-cylinder diesel mill has the ability to unleash a maximum power of 74bhp that yields a superior torque output of 190Nm.

Maruti Swift Accessories

Stereo & Accessories

Editor's take : The Swift comes loaded with integrated music system, steering mounted audio controls, electrically adjustable ORVMs. These features are also available on the diesel as it has ZDi variant too.

This hatchback is packed with an audio equipment that lets its passengers listen to their favorite tunes, while driving. It holds a CD player, two front tweeters, radio tuner and has four large speakers at front and rear. This supports USB port, auxiliary input, Bluetooth connectivity and has a speed based automatic volume control. This facility is now provided to the newly launched Glory Edition. Also, it has a steering wheel mounted illuminated audio and phone controls, which makes it convenient for the driver. It includes a sporty antenna that helps in better reception of radio signals.

You can now buy Maruti Swift accessories online. Great discounts available.

Braking & Handling

Editor's take : With its rallying pedigree, the Swift has been a good handler. The Swift drives well on winding roads and is definitely a good pick as a driver’s car. The Swift can give the European competition a run for their buck.

The presence of ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) in its top end helps in preventing wheel lockup during panic braking. Its front wheels have ventilated discs, while the rear ones have drum brakes. Just like its predecessor, the suspension of the front axle is mated with a McPherson strut that has a coil spring, while the rear one has a torsion beam with a similar coil spring. This frame type front suspension present in it offers better stability and driving comfort on any road condition.

Maruti Swift Safety and Security

Safety & Security

Editor's take : The Swift gets all the safety features like two airbags and ABS. These are the standard features offered on most of the B+ segment hatchbacks.

The presence of dual SRS front airbags is of great help during accidents and collision, which reduces the impact and provides a cushioning effect. The ABS (anti-lock braking system) is available in top end plus VDI trims. This prevents wheel locking in case of sudden braking and controls its stability accompanied by a brake assist. This hatch unlocks automatically in case of an accident and there is auto lock, when key is removed. The intelligent computerized anti-theft set-up helps to track it, which reduces the chances of unwelcome guests. The halogen headlamps offer a very clear visibility to the roads and reduce the danger henceforth. The availability of front and rear fog lamps in some variants act as a safeguard when driving in bad weather conditions. The front and rear ELR seat belts minimize the risk of injury in the event of a collision. The ZXI and ZDI are available with rear parking sensors that assist the driver to park it easily. Remaining safety measures like child safety locks, high mounted stop lamp which is clearly visible, double horn, side impact beams and head restraints enhance the level of security.

Maruti Swift Wheels

Wheels

The wheel arches of its base and mid range have a set of conventional 14-inch steel wheels, which are covered with 165/80 R14 sized tubeless radial tyres. The high end line come with a stylish set of 15 inch alloy wheels that have tubeless radial tyres of size 185/65 R15. A full size spare wheel that is fitted in the luggage compartment with all other tools helps in changing a flat tyre.

Pros

1. Added features surely gives it a shot in the arm.

2. Improved fuel efficiency is an added advantage.

3. Refined exteriors makes it more captivating.

4. Performance is impressive.

5. Competitive pricing adds brownie points to it.

Cons

1. There is still scope to improvise its interiors.

2. Boot compartment space can be better.

3. Rear seat has limited leg room.

4. Diesel engine noise can be reduced.
