These Are The Top 5 Upcoming Expressways In Uttar Pradesh

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been fast-tracking major highway projects across India. Uttar Pradesh, already home to high-speed corridors like the Lucknow-Agra and Yamuna Expressways, is set to see its network grow even further in the coming years. Here are 5 upcoming highway and expressway projects to watch out for:

Ganga Expressway

Length: 594 Km

Meerut To Prayagraj

To connect cities near Delhi NCR (National Capital Region) with Prayagraj, the city on the banks of the holy river Ganga, the ‘Ganga Expressway’ is currently under construction. According to the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the expressway will feature 6 lanes with service roads and will be expandable to 8 lanes in the future. It is designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph.

This expressway will also feature a 3.5 km-long airstrip, making it the first expressway in India to support night landings for fighter jets. The airstrip is located in Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. The Ganga Expressway is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway

Length: 63 Km

To increase convenience and reduce travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur, a new six-lane expressway is about to open. It will start from Lucknow’s Azad Chauraha and end near Kanpur’s Ganga Bridge, cutting travel time between the two cities from 1.5 hours to around 45 minutes. The expressway is not yet fully operational, but it is likely to be by the end of this year.

Gorakhpur-Link Expressway

Length: 91.3 Km

To link Gorakhpur and nearby towns directly to the Purvanchal Expressway, a new 91 km-long Gorakhpur Expressway has been built, also connecting cities like Azamgarh, Ambedkar Nagar, and Sant Kabir Nagar to the main Purvanchal Expressway. It is a four-lane expressway, expandable to 6 lanes. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated this link expressway in June 2025.

Chitrakoot Link Expressway (Planned)

Length: 15.17 Km

This link expressway will connect Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh to the Bundelkhand Expressway and the Varanasi-Banda route. It will enhance convenience for travellers coming from Delhi and nearby areas, while improving connectivity to Chitrakoot Dham, an important spiritual destination in the state. The project received approval in July 2025 and, according to UPEIDA, is expected to be completed in about 1.5 years.

Vindhya Expressway (Planned)

Length: 320 km

This expressway will not only improve Sonbhadra’s connectivity to Varanasi and Prayagraj but is also planned to link the district to the soon-to-be-operational Ganga Expressway. It will also facilitate access from Uttar Pradesh to cities in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. More details are yet to be confirmed by government officials.

Apart from these five expressways, a 76 km long Jewar Link expressway, around 60 km long Agra Lucknow Expressway-Purvanchal Expressway Link Expressway, and a 90 km Agra Lucknow Expressway-Ganga Expressway Link Expressway are also proposed.

The UP government is set to invest nearly Rs 50,000 crore in next few years for the construction of these new highways. As per government officials, the focus is to connect Lucknow (state capital) and Delhi NCR (national capital region) to other districts of UP. This will not only help for a seamless highway connectivity, but also give a boost to UP’s economy via trade and tourism. Taking into account both the operational and under-construction projects in the state, UP’s expressway network is currently 1,788 km long. Once all the proposed projects become operational, the total length of expressways in the state will be more than 2,600 km.
