Compass highlights

The Jeep Compass has recently crossed the 10,000 sales milestone and it will see a price hike from January 2018. Check out the details here.

The Jeep Compass starts from Rs 15.16 lakh and goes up to Rs 21.37 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Jeep recorded 10,000 bookings after a month of its launch and its production has been ramped up to reduce waiting periods. To see how the Jeep Compass fares on Indian roads and off-road, take a look at the video review.

The Compass comes across as a premium alternative to 7-seater crossovers/SUVs like the Tata Hexa and Mahindra XUV500, while also coming close to the top-spec Hyundai Creta. Additionally, it undercuts the Hyundai Tucson on the price chart and is considerably cheaper than the VW Tiguan.

While the Jeep Compass petrol delivers a claimed mileage of 14.1kmpl (4x2 automatic), the diesel is rated at 17.1kmpl and 16.3kmpl for the 4x2 and 4x4 variants, respectively. It offers a laden ground clearance of 178mm.

The Jeep Compass may be Jeep’s most affordable model but it certainly isn’t lacking in equipment. Features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, ESP and ISOFIX child seat mounts are offered standard.

The Jeep Compass is available in five colour options for the body - Hydro Blue, Exotica Red, Brilliant Black, Vocal White and Minimal Grey. The top-end Limited (O) variant gets a contrast coloured roof, making it easier to identify. To know what each variant offer, do check out our story: Jeep Compass: Variants Explained

My friend recently bought the Jeep Compass and we got out for a small drive. As we drove down the highways, the car felt well planted and I didn?t have to switch gears very frequently in order to keep the car moving, which made it pretty relaxing to drive. But when we came back in the city, the heavy clutch started to get irritating and painful. The infotainment system offered with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will not disappoint you but it would have been better if it had a large screen in pl... 18

Jeep Compass review

We drove Jeep India's entry-level SUV offering, the Compass, in Goa and it looks to be a potential game changer in the segment. Here's why

The Jeep Compass is the carmaker’s first made-in-India product and one that could potentially do some serious damage to its rivals - the list reads long right from the Mahindra XUV5OO, Tata Hexa, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Fortuner and more..And that’s largely down to the Jeep Compass’ shock pricing of Rs 14.95 lakh for the base petrol model!

Affordability has surely helped bring Jeep’s legacy to the masses who are always hungry for more premium SUVs.  But fantastic pricing aside, is the Jeep Compass any good? Here’s our first impressions of what the Compass is all about having driven the SUV over two days in Goa We drove the top-of-the-line Compass ‘Limited’ variant powered by a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine, with a 6-speed manual transmission and an intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

Things We Like in Compass

  • Jeep Compass has powerful (173PS/350Nm) and frugal (16.3kmpl - 4x4, 17.1kmpl - 4x2) diesel engine
  • Compact on the outside, spacious on the inside. Premium quality too.
  • Value for money. The luxury/comfort/capability to price ratio is unmatched.
  • Off-road ability with intelligent shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system.
  • Standard safety features (ABS, EBD, dual airbags, traction control, ESP and more), Top-of-the-line variant gets 6-airbags.

Things We Don't Like in Compass

  • Dummy buttons, especially on the steering wheel, take away from premium feel.
  • No diesel automatic variant offered yet.
  • No auto headlamps, auto wipers and cruise control in the Jeep Compass.
  • Infotainment system can face lag at times.

Stand Out Features

  • High-intensity discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlamps offer powerful illumination. Particularly useful for trail/highway driving.

CarDekho Verdict

It is difficult to come to a definitive conclusion about the Jeep Compass based on a short drive. Jeep has priced the Compass rather competitively with prices ranging from 14.95 lakh to Rs 20.65 lakh - much more competitively than we had anticipated earlier. It comes across as a value-for-money product as compared to its direct rival, the Hyundai Tucson, which is priced from Rs 18.13 lakh to Rs 23.86 lakh and is only available with 4x2 petrol and diesel variants. At that price, it not only undercuts the Hyundai Tucson comfortably but also falls in the range of top-variants of SUVs like XUV5OO & Hexa. While these may offer some features that the Compass skimps on (a sunroof, for example, which the XUV500 gets) they cannot match the brand value that the compact Jeep offers.

"It comes across as a value-for-money product as compared to its direct rival, the Hyundai Tucson."

Initial impressions are encouraging; it looks tough but also welcoming, has a very comfortable and spacious cabin, feels premium with the features on offer, is surprisingly good to drive and is practical too. There are some bits of the Compass which could have been done better (the dummy buttons on the steering wheel especially), but customers may choose to ignore these because of the premium badge feeling of the SUV. Jeep has small sales and after-sales network in India as of now, which is spread across 50 cities - for those who follow their head rather than their heart, this will be a big deciding factor.
