At a recently held event, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, revealed that he will be taking the covers off a Toyota flex-fuel-powered car on September 28 in India.

While Gadkari, during his speech, said that he will launch the flex-fuel-powered car, he didn’t mention the model. That said, it’s safe to say that the vehicle will be tried on a pilot basis to gauge the feasibility of such engines in India.

Check out the video from 8:30 minutes onwards:

What Is Flex-fuel?

Flex-fuels are a blend of petrol and ethanol (or methanol) and will be cheaper than petrol. Ethanol, commonly known as biofuel, is a pure form of alcohol made from sugarcane, among other things. A flex-fuel engine can basically run on either standalone or blended fuel.

Other Players Eyeing It

Toyota isn’t the only carmaker who will be coming out with flex-fuel-powered vehicles in India. Back in August 2022, it was revealed that Maruti had already begun work on its flex-fuel engine option, which will support 85 percent of ethanol power (E85).

Toyota And Gadkari’s Previous Collaborations

This isn’t the first time that Gadkari’s government and Toyota have joined hands to carry out a pilot study. Since early 2022, the minister had been roaming around in the Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen-powered vehicle, to study the possibility of introducing hydrogen cars in India.

At the same event, Gadkari once again appealed to all carmakers to bring out their ethanol-compliant powertrains. He had also recently shared the government’s targeted price of green hydrogen to make the shift to greener vehicles quickly and more efficiently.
