The home grown tyre-maker, MRF Tyres has launched a new single-seater racing series that features the F2000 cars. Narain Karthikeyan, India’s first F1 driver and MRF brand ambassador drove the car around the Express Avenue Mall. As per the calendar, the first round of the MRF Challenge 2012 would be held as support races on 27th- 28th October with the F1 Indian Grand Prix and second will be on 1st- 2nd December with FIA GT1 event.

Commenting on the car, Narain Karthikeyan said that driving around the mall was the first of its kind experience. He further added that it was difficult to drive a high-speed car in the venue. The man behind the making, of this car and a former International driver, J. Anand, said that MRF wanted a world class car with which they could show the company’s tyre technology. Further, he said that introducing a Formula 3 type of car is a good way to achieve the goal and showcase MRF’s abilities.

The Formula 3-spec Dallara chassis which comes with carbon-fibre, uses the 2.0-litre, 210bhp Renault-Sport drivetrain. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed sequential transmission. The engine will make the Formula series the fastest single make series in Asia. These cars will be assembled locally at the Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotive, in a technical collaboration with Dallara of Italy. The Vice President Marketing, MRF, Koshy Varghese said that the total cost of the 20 cars being manufactured for 2012 will be Rs. 50 Lakh. The total fee for the entire season, which is 10 races for Indian as well as International drivers, will be Rs. 45 Lakh, informed Mr. Varghese.
