The diesel engine still has plenty of grunt while 4WD is standard

  • The second-gen Thar will be available in three variants: AX, AX Opt and LX.

  • The Thar gets a choice of 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel, both with the option of a 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT.

  • The entry-spec AX variant will only get the diesel-manual option.

  • The AX variant will get manual AC, dual airbags, ABS with EBD and a fixed soft top.

  • The AX variant will likely be priced under Rs 10 lakh.

The second-gen Mahindra Thar, which is a huge step forward from the previous model, is due to launch on October 2. It gets a lot of firsts including a petrol engine, automatic transmission options, and even a factory-fitted hard top. We know that it will be available in three variants but the entry-level AX variant will not get the option of the new petrol engine.

The new Thar’s engine options are a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel unit, both of which are available with the choice of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. Mahindra is offering 4WD as standard on the Thar. In its entry-level AX variant, the Thar is only available with the diesel-manual option, with 130PS and 300Nm on offer which is 20PS less than what the petrol-manual offers.

Since it’s the base spec model of the new Thar, it has the least comforts and a fixed soft top roof but it still features manual AC, a monochrome multi-information display in the instrument cluster, and a 12V accessory socket. It also gets safety essentials like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and seatbelt alert.

As it is low on comforts, the entry-level Thar may be priced below Rs 10 lakh while the highest-spec model with the automatic transmission could touch the Rs 13-lakh mark. It won’t have any direct rivals at launch until the arrival of the new-gen Force Gurkha by 2020 end, but it will be priced similarly to compact SUVs such as Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, Nissan Kicks and Kia Seltos.
