Nissan Kicks Review

The Nissan Kicks is here and it looks promising on paper It’s longer than any other compact SUV or crossover in India, wider than the Creta and is quite feature-rich too. It’s got a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine along with the tried and tested 1.5-litre petrol engine and underpinnings that have managed to impress us in the past for ride quality. So there’s quite a lot that already makes the Kicks a product to look forward to. Let us then get into the details and find out whether it’s the compact crossover you should put your money on or not.

Pros & Cons of Nissan Kicks

  • Things We Like

    • Quality interior: Quality of material, fit & finish inside the cabin is better than other cars in this segment
    • Noise insulation: Engine noise, road noise not as audible inside as in siblings (Captur, Duster, Terrano); lifts cabin experience up
    • Mature ride: The ride is supple, but not bouncy. It can handle small and large road uncertainties at any speeds with aplomb
    • 360-degree parking assist: Cameras at the front, rear, and both sides give an all-around view to ease parking; segment-first feature
    • Powerful new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine makes 156PS/254Nm

  • Things We Don't Like

    • Ergonomic issues: Driver’s seat set a little high; particularly uncomfortable for tall drivers. Footwell is too cramped
    • Feature misses: No light for passenger vanity mirror. Top variant misses out on auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, powered driver seat and sunroof
    • No diesel engine option

The Kicks' strengths include its strong presence, premium interiors and comfortable ride quality. But, it could do with some added feel good features and a diesel powertrain. Recent price cuts should see it gain favour with more buyers.

    Latest Update: Nissan has discontinued its compact SUV, the Kicks.

    Price: Towards the end of its lifecycle, the compact SUV was priced from Rs 9.50 lakh to Rs 14.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

    Variants: It was sold in three trims: XL, XV and XV Premium.

    Colours: Nissan offered the Kicks in three dual-tone and six monotone exterior shades: Pearl White and Onyx Black, Bronze Grey and Amber Orange, Fire Red and Onyx Black, Pearl White, Blade Silver, Bronze Grey, Deep Blue Pearl, Night Shade and Fire Red.

    Seating Capacity: It was a five-seater compact SUV.

    Engine and Transmission: The Kicks was available with two petrol engine options: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit (106PS/142Nm) mated to a five-speed manual and a 1.3-litre turbo unit (156PS/254Nm) paired with a six-speed manual or CVT.

    Features: It got cruise control, auto AC, an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and push-button start/stop.

    Safety: Passenger safety was ensured by four airbags, ABS with EBD and electronic stability control (ESC).

    Rivals: The Nissan Kicks was a rival to the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, MG Astor, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.
