Mahindra Bolero Neo expert review
Overview
Mahindra has bravely put the ‘Bolero’ name on another SUV. This is a big deal, considering the Bolero is an SUV in its truest form for India. It's low on maintenance and high on capability. However, its rudimentary nature has made it inadequate for modern Indian families.
With the Bolero Neo, the idea was to give you the same Bolero toughness but with a modern design, cabin experience and features. This SUV was originally launched as the Mahindra TUV300, and got the new name with a mild facelift in 2021.
Now, in 2025, Mahindra has given the Bolero Neo, another facelift, making it more competetive for the buyers.

This is a sub-4-metre SUV with a twist. It uses a robust body-on-frame construction and is rear-wheel drive. It’s clearly not built for everyone. So who should consider it? And why?
Exterior
Design and Quality
With the facelift, Mahindra aimed at making the Bolero Neo look friendlier. Looking at the face, there are a few apparent design changes. A redesigned grille with horizontal slats and abundant chrome accents makes it appear more young than its predecessor, which had vertical slats. At the bottom, there is a new hefty silver bumper insert that replaces the grey one from the previous generation. Aside from that, the halogen headlights and fog lamps are unchanged.

Coming to the side, the profile retains its traditional boxy aspect. The main changes here are a dual-tone roof and new dark grey 16-inch alloy wheels, which add to the car's character. Aside from this, the body-colored outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), pull-type door handles, and fender-mounted indicators are unchanged. There is also an integrated side step to facilitate access and exit.

In the top-spec N11 model, Mahindra provides 16-inch alloy wheels. Lower variants get steel wheels.

Also new is the beltline cladding which helps it connect visually to the Bolero and the D-Pillar, which is now finished in body color. The side step and roof rails add the final SUV touches to the square-ish silhouette.
At the back, the clear tail lamps have been made red again and the spare wheel cover gets the new moniker. The spare wheel cover is finished in black for lower trims, whereas the top-spec N10 and N1 versions get a deep silver cover.

Overall, the changes make the Bolero Neo look more urban and this will surely spark interest in a lot of buyers looking for something more authentic in the crowded crossover segment. Here is the Bolero Neo explained in 12 real life images.
The 2025 Mahindra Bolero Neo now comes in two additional colour options: Jeans Blue and Concrete Grey. It also continues to offer other colours, including Rocky Beige, Stealth Black, Pearl White, and Diamond White. The two new colours, along with Pearl White, can be combined with a two-tone black roof.
Interior
Design and Quality
The Bolero Neo's interior looks more modern and upmarket now, thanks to the addition of leatherette upholstery. There are two new interior colour options on offer - Mocha Brown or Lunar Grey - depending on the variant you pick. The dashboard layout is simple, featuring a new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre and basic rotary controls for AC controls.

The quality and texture of the black contrast panel is acceptable but the rest of the plastics feel utilitarian. The seat fabric and the door pads feel like they have been built to take punishment but yet manage to look and feel good.
Front Seats
Getting in and out of the Bolero Neo isn’t the easiest owing to its height. Thankfully, Mahindra has provided side steps (from the N8 variant onwards) which will be helpful for the elderly.
The front seats are large, well-cushioned and supportive. They feel comfortable even for longer trips. We like that Mahindra has provided individual armrests for both the driver and co-driver. However, it would have been better if the height on the door armrest and the middle armrest was the same.
You can adjust the driver’s seat for height, and the steering gets tilt-adjustment. This allows you to get a commanding driving position. You can spot the end of the bonnet easily and the wide window area means visibility is great too.

Rear Seats
The Bolero Neo has among the most spacious and comfortable rear seats in the segment. There’s more than enough width to accommodate three adults here. Even six-footers will have no issues with kneeroom or headroom here either.

Third Row
Unique to the Bolero Neo are the jump seats that make up the third row. It can accommodate kids or an average-sized adult. And though there are no AC vents, the windows do open. However, the seats still miss a seatbelt and headrests. Therefore, we would not recommend using these seats.

Storage and Practicality
Cabin practicality is taken care of by large door pockets for all doors, 2 cup holders and a bottle holder in the center console and two shallow cubby spaces.
Complaints start with the glove box, which is a bit narrow, and there is no dedicated mobile phone storage. Also, the under-driver seat and tailgate storage have been removed. And at the back, the second row passengers don't get cupholders in the armrest.
Charging Options
It is rather weird that such a large vehicle has a single 12V charging socket, that too only for the front occupants. Mahindra should look at providing USB chargers for all three rows.
Features
In terms of features, the 2025 Bolero now includes a new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display in addition to the familiar analogue instrument cluster with a coloured multi-information display (MID), a 6-speaker sound system, all four power windows, a height-adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, and manual air conditioning.
The MID in the instrument cluster is similar to what we have seen in the 3-door Thar as well and it provides all basic information such as trip data, distance to empty, and fuel efficiency.
Other features include steering-mounted audio controls, cruise control, power windows and powered ORVMs.
Safety
Like the feature list, the safety kit is bare basic too. This includes ABS with EBD, dual front airbags, rear parking sensors and Corner Braking Control as standard, while ISOFIX child seat mounts are available in the top N10 & N11 variants. Even with the 2025 facelift, which is more like an update, we still have not seen 6 airbags in any variant.
The Bolero Neo was crash tested by GlobalNCAP in 2024. It scored a dismal 1 star safety rating for both adult occupant safety and child occupant safety. Further, the structure was rated as unstable.

Boot Space
If you fold the jump seats away, you get 384-litres of boot space. Given the wide and tall storage space, you can very easily carry large suitcases if required. The second row also folds down, giving you access to a long and wide cargo area that can be used to move large appliances or even furniture with ease.
Performance
The Bolero Neo is available with a single engine option. On offer is a 1.5-litre diesel engine that makes 100PS of power and 260Nm of torque. As is typical of a diesel engine, there are vibrations to be felt, and some clatter to be heard throughout your drive. The engine also gets loud when you reach higher engine speeds.
City Performance
Mahindra has gotten the torque spread of the engine spot on. This ensures that there’s plenty of pick up even at low revs. Despite being a heavy 1.5 tonne SUV, the Bolero Neo has strong acceleration and it builds speed with relative ease. You can drive it around the city in second gear without the engine knocking or protesting for a downshift. The 5-speed transmission is easy to slot in and the clutch is light too, making for friendly city commutes. That said, an automatic transmission is sorely missed.
From a fuel efficiency standpoint, you can expect the Bolero Neo to return 11-13kmpl in city traffic. To aid this, Mahindra offers an ‘Eco’ driving mode as well as auto start-stop technology.
Highway Performance
Owing to the wide band of torque, cruising at triple digit speeds is very relaxed. The engine is spinning at ~2000rpm in fifth gear at 100kmph, which is a sweet spot for the engine. There’s not much urgency to be had in performance beyond this point.
You can do long highway tours in the Bolero Neo with ease. It is likely to deliver a mileage of 14-16kmpl, making it quite efficient.
Note: Multi Terrain Technology
The Mahindra Bolero Neo is a rear-wheel drive SUV. In the top N10 (O) variant gets Multi Terrain Technology (MMT). This is a mechanical locking differential which can sense when a rear wheel wheel loses traction. And when this happens, the differential locks the slipping wheel and sends more torque to the one with more traction, helping you get out of a slippery situation with more ease. This works like a charm, and will be a boon for people taking the Neo where other urban cars have no business going.
If you foresee heavy usage in hilly areas or broken interior roads where rear-wheel drive is likely to have a benefit — the Bolero Neo is your only option (unless you pick a Thar!).
Ride and Handling
The suspension offers acceptable stability at higher speeds. However, this has a trade off on the low speed ride quality. There is a firmness in the suspension which, at light load, will be felt in the cabin. Over speed breakers or bumps, the cabin does move around a bit, more so at the back. A quick fix to this is not to slow down. Go over these with momentum and the Bolero Neo just glides over them. Again, less so for the rear passengers.
On the other side, the stiffer springs have given the Neo better handling characteristics. Combined with the lower centre of gravity (vs the TUV300), it does manage its weight better and feels more stable on high speed lane changes and corners. There is still a lot of body roll, just less than before. For every day drives and highway cruises, you’re unlikely to have complaints with the steering weight or feel.
With the 2025 Facelift, the Bolero Neo gets FDD (Frequency Dependent Dampers). We are yet to experience the ride with that update.
Variants
The Mahindra Bolero Neo is available in four broad variants: N4, N8, N10 and N11. Additionally, an N10 (O) is also available. You can check out the variant-wise pricing of the Bolero Neo here.

CarDekho Recommends:
Consider only the N11 variant of the Bolero Neo. Even that is a little too basic by today’s standards. Features such as push-button start, climate control, rear AC vents should have been on offer at the least.
Verdict
The Mahindra Bolero Neo has a likeable personality. It’s focusing purely on what it's good at - being a simple and capable SUV with enough space to keep occupants comfortable. The rear-wheel drive setup along with the locking rear differential makes it much more capable on rough roads than any other sub-4-metre SUV out there.
Consider the Bolero Neo if you want a functional and utilitarian workhorse.
