Pilote, the French firm which bestowed the first-ever caravan in 1962, has decided to bring-in luxury caravans in India by entering a joint venture with Mega Motoren & Lifestyles, based in Delhi. The Indian counterpart, Mega Group will launch these caravans with diesel engines and Mercedes-Benz and Fiat Motors will contribute significantly in the make-up of chassis. The luxury caravans can be priced at Rs 75 lakh and can go up to Rs 2 crore, depending upon specifications and customization. Light commercial vehicles maker Force Motors is also a player in selling caravans in India.

Mega Group, which will look after the distribution and service of these luxury caravans across the country, will launch these vehicles in Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad initially.  These luxury caravans can be as long as 6 meters going even up to 8.59 meters. All the vehicles will be fully imported from France as CBUs. The market for caravans in India is extremely small with sales of a few hundred vehicles. Targeting sales of around 40-50 units in the first year, Mudit Srivastava, CEO of Mega Motoren said that their company plans to spread the luxury vehicles to six cities by January, with all sales and service support.

Srivastava seems to be very confidant about the prospective response in India towards the luxury caravans. He said that the population of over 50,000 customers owning luxury cars in India is a ready market for such vehicles. Bollywood stars, politicians, entrepreneurs and inbound high-end tourists are also the probable clients. Mega Group is negotiating with tourism bodies of states such as Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala, which see a high number of foreign tourists. Caravans, equipped for living in with built-in kitchen, bedroom and washroom with furnishings and equipment-are also popular in the US and Europe for long-distance holidays.
