British luxury marque Jaguar just unveiled the C-X17 concept an evening before the Frankfurt Motor Show. This is the first crossover concept for the Coventry-based manufacturer and CarDekho gets to speak to the man who heads the design department for Jaguar, Mr Ian Callum to understand what he had in his mind while designing the C-X17.

Jaguar C-X17

Q1) The C-X17 has several Jaguar design cues, what are the unique design characters that are first seen on this crossover?

Ans) It is mostly the proportions of the C-X17, it is a more of functional design and the first in the Jaguar history. The side window graphics or the Day Light Opening is different on this from any other Jaguars, when you compare it to the XF, the F-Type or even the XJ. This is one character that is different on the C-X17 because of its functional styling.

Q2) The C-X17 is a crossover, and there will be several who will compare it to the Land Rover.

Ans) Well, the Land Rover is all about capability to off-road and that is the key point for their SUVs. Even the Range Rover Sport is about off-roading and also on-road performance. With the C-X17 it is all about on-road performance and most of the buyers won’t take it off the road, though it will be good off the road as well. The Land Rovers are about geometric and structural design and our styling is different and speaks different language.

Q3) One or two words to describe this concept.

Ans) The C-X17 is an intriguing concept because it has been a challenge for us especially for the height it is. I think it is confident, it shows Jaguar can make a crossover.
