The Tata Zest Quadrajet 1.3 XTA has a 1.3-litre diesel engine under the hood, coupled to a five-speed AMT transmission. It is based on the XT variant of the Zest and is priced at Rs 8.68 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi as of 5 May, 2017). It is the most expensive automatic Zest and is around Rs 80,000 more expensive than the XT diesel which has a five-speed manual transmission. The Tata Zest Quadrajet 1.3 XTA is the fully loaded automatic Zest.
The 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine produces 90PS of maximum power at 4000 rpm and 200Nm of torque between 1750-3000rpm. It has a claimed fuel efficiency of 21.58 kmpl which is slightly more than what is offered by its manual counterpart: 20.65 kmpl. However, unlike most of the AMT transmissions, the Zest doesn't start moving as soon as you slot the gear into D-mode and step off the brake. Instead you need to tap the accelerator. If you want to shift the gear manually, it has a manual mode too, and a sport mode which increases the responsiveness of car. However, the manual and sport mode cannot be used at the same time.
When it comes to safety the Zest Quadrajet 1.3 XTA comes with driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, corner stability control and front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters. It has also scored a decent four stars in the crash test conducted by Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP).
In terms of features, it has a Harman Kardon touchscreen infotainment system with four speakers and four tweeters, steering-mounted audio control, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors with turn indicators, projector headlamps, front and rear fog lights and day and night interior rearview mirror.
However, the features that set it apart from other lower variants are height-adjustable driver seat, automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, LED DRLs and alloy wheels.
Offered only in the diesel avatar, the Zest Premio gets 13 new cosmetic add-ons
While the Zest and the Maruti Suzuki Dzire share the same diesel motor, the Zest had an upper hand thanks a more powerful state of tune. With the recent changes, the Zest and the Dzire are now on par in terms of performance
The non-profit organisation Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) has been testing mass-market Indian cars under its campaign – #SaferCarsforIndia – since the past couple of years. Continuing the campaign, Global NCAP has recently tested the Tata Zest and the compact sedan has scored a decent four-star rating. We appreciate Global NCAP’s campaign since the government has made dual-front airbags as standard on all new cars from October 2017 along with a few other safety features.
Tata Motors has added new variants to the Zest line-up with the 75 PS version of its diesel engine. Launched in 2014, Zest is Tata Motor’s second compact sedan, which sells around two thousand units per month. To make this version more accessible in terms of features and public appeal, Tata has introduced this engine in its higher variants.
