Scala Diesel RxL Travelogue Review
Renault India has launched the Travelogue Edition of its popular sedan Scala in the country's car market. The automaker has launched it in three petrol and two diesel variants, which comes in manual as well as automatic transmission gear box. This Renault Scala Diesel RxL Travelogue Edition comes with quite a few additional features, which makes the sedan look more attractive. These aspects include a brilliant touchscreen navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, LED scuff plates, sun blinds and side blinkers on outside rear view mirrors as well. This variant is fitted with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which comes with a displacement capacity of 1461cc. It has the ability to churn out a maximum power output of 84.8bhp along with a peak torque of 200Nm. It is incorporated with a direct injection fuel supply system, which helps in generating a decent fuel economy. The company claims that this sedan can return 21.64 Kmpl on the highways and about 18.5 Kmpl in the city, when driven under standard conditions. It is available in five exterior paint options for the buyers to choose from. The list includes Metallic Blue, Solid Black, Pearl White, Metallic White and Silver with metallic finish option as well.
Exteriors:
The company has given this variant an aerodynamic body structure and it is fitted with a few striking features that gives it an appealing look. The front fascia has a bold radiator grille with a lot of chrome treatment and is embedded with a prominent company badge in the center. It is flanked by a well designed headlight cluster that is powered by high intensity halogen lamps and turn indicators. The two tone bumper is fitted with a wide air dam for cooling the engine. The sleek bonnet comes with visible character lines and the large windscreen has been integrated with a couple of intermittent wipers. The side profile is fitted with chrome plated door handles and body colored outside rear view mirrors. These ORVMs are electrically adjustable and integrated with side blinker as wel l. The flared up wheel arches are equipped with a classy set of 14 inch alloy wheels. These rims are covered with 185/70 R14 sized tubeless radial tyres. On the other hand, the rear end is fitted with a dual tone bumper with a pair of reflectors and a radiant tail light cluster. The windshield is integrated with a defogger and a high mounted brake light as well.
Interiors:
The internal cabin of this Renault Scala Diesel RxL Travelogue Edition is designed with Dark Grey and Beige color scheme. The smooth dashboard is equipped with AC vents, steering wheel, an instrument panel and a large glove box as well. The car manufacturer has incorporated this trim with some utility based aspects like cup and bottle holders, front seat back pockets, cabin lamps, adjustable driver sea t, a 12V power socket for charging electronic devices, remote fuel lid opener, sun visors with vanity mirror and many other such aspects. The illuminated instrument panel of this trim houses a tachometer, door ajar warning, a digital clock, outside temperature display, key left reminder notification, headlights on reminder buzzer and so on. This variant is fitted with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which comes with a displacement capacity of 1461cc. This four cylinder based power plant can churn out a maximum power of 84.8bhp at 3750rpm in combination with 200Nm torque output at 2000rpm. It is coupled with a five speed manual transmission gear box, which sends the engine power to its front wheels. This diesel mill is incorporated with a direct injection fuel supply system, which helps in delivering a healthy fuel economy. This sedan has the ability to attain a maximum speed in the range of 155 to 160 Kmph. At the same time, it can cross the speed barrier of 100 Kmph in close to 15 seconds that is rather decent for this segment.
Braking and Handling:
The company has given this sedan a proficient suspension system, which keeps it stable at all times. The front axle is assembled with a McPherson strut, while the rear is fitted with torsion bar type of mechanism. The braking mechanism is further enhanced by anti lock braking system along with electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist function . The front wheels are equipped with a set of disc brakes, while the rear ones are fitted with conventional drum brakes. On the other hand, the manufacturer has given it an electronic power steering system, which supports a minimum turning radius of 5.3 meters. This Renault Scala Diesel RxL Travelogue variant comes with quite a few features, which gives the occupants a comfortable driving experience. The integrated music system is equipped with CD/MP3 player, radio, Aux-in port and USB interface along with Bluetooth connectivity . It also has a multi-functional steering wheel, which is mounted with audio and phone control buttons. The efficient air conditioning unit comes with air quality filter and rear comfort blower as well. Apart from these, it is bestowed with clutch foot rest, a touchscreen display with navigation system, rear center armrest with cup holders, follow me home headlamps and so on.
Safety Features:
The car manufacturer has blessed this variant with a number of aspects for a stress free driving experience. - Renault Scala - Elegant and Reliable
I have a top-end Diesel Scala and is driven by my family is a Tier 2 town. +ves Elegant Design : Scala has adorable cuts and curves - the French elements of design on the Japanese platform has given us a perfect blend of glitz with class. Boot Space is decent, it cozies up all passengers and can easily take 3 in the backseat. Reliability : 15 months into ownership and the only expenditure has been the regular maintenance service- which cost almost nothing. All parts, fabric and switch gear are in place and looks brand new and glossy. Engine is calm and doesn't disturb the cabin - it feels a touch slow from the accelerator response but you can see that you pick up pace very easily whether on traffic or highways. Suspension and Comfort levels are 5 star. I drive it only during my vacation visits to home, but it is incredible how the Scala adjusts to the twisties and bad roads of Kerala. With almost no stretch of long roads, Scala feels a little over-powered for the routes I drive around, but the ride is always comfortable. Yes, it wasn't the most updated mid-sized sedan , but it is priced well for the top end diesel variant. Renaults are VFM and are 5% cheaper than the corresponding Nissans. Lack of navigations, touch screen is a concern, but can always be made up for, with your mobile device. A neat buy for any family with the head member 35-40+ in age. Don't go for the outright loud looks of all too common City , buy the nicer Scala. Treat Scala as a stretch from your compact sedan budget, not as a midsize sedan in terms of pricing/features. The first thing that comes to my mind is its space and comfort while going for long drives. Bought this car on 2013, drove more than 90000 km still engine and performance remains same. Read a lot of reviews while buying the car, no one suggested the Scala. Some say it's overpriced some asked me to go for the Sunny but somehow decided to stay with the Scala. Pros after using 90000km 1 ) Space: No car in 12 Lakh segment provides leg room space as the Scala. Its spacious interiors give us a lot of comforts. I used to have long drives with family (min 1500km) every two months. Everyone is comfort with it. 2) Mileage: Being a frequent traveller this is one of my major pros. I used to get 23 -25 km on highways and 16 -18 in the city. Mileage is constant from day 1 till today i.e after 90000km. 3) AC: I believe the automatic AC works really good in the Scala than most of its counterparts. You could feel the chillness in a matter of few mins even at peak temperatures during summer. 4) Safety: Nowadays cars coming with advertisements like ABS and EBD. Scala had this in 2013 itself. I have mid variant RxL. Good thing is it comes with ABS along with EBD and two airbags for the driver and co-passenger. These features come in the top variant in most of the other cars in this price bracket. 5) Boot space: With 490 litres you can accommodate everything you need for a long drive with the family. Cons: 1) Noise after reaching the speed of 120km/h. I feel this bit irritating as feel some noise after you reach this speed. But it's not that major constraint as we will not be touching that speed too often. Look and Style - Best in class style and looks, none of the other manufacturers can counter the aerodynamic design of this car. Mileage - In the city, I was getting anything between 12 to 16 kmpl which is remarkable for a mid-size sedan segment. On highways, this touches 18 to 21 kmpl depending on the road conditions. In spite of complaints, it was attended and improved to 17.5 kmpl but again in the next fill, it failed. The true defect/shortcoming has not been resolved. Therefore, since prices of Petrol and Diesel now coming to par - the purpose of savings on fuel is defeated. So why pay more for diesel variant cars.
