7th-Dec-2011: Maruti Suzuki is going to showcase MR Wagon ‘kei’ in Indian Auto Expo to be held in capital city-Delhi in Jan. Maruti Suzuki is all set to bring two kei cars-one of which is MR Wagon. Kei cars fall in a category of small cars in Japan and are quite popular in the country. MR Wagon Kei car is a 3 cylinder, 657cc petrol engined car. Besides this it is available in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated form. The turbocharged version produces 60 BHP power and a peak torque of 97 Nm while on the other hand aspirated engine produces 54 Bhp power and 64Nm torque. These figures show that MR Wagon gives high fuel economy, which is supposed to be more than 22 Kmpl in Japanese conditions. Since it carries sub-800 cc engine, it was initially thought of as a Tata Nano rival. However, soon the air was cleared and it was confirmed that Suzuki is just bringing these cars for display in Auto Expo and not for actual sale or launch purpose. In fact, MR Wagon will be showcasing to get the consumer feedback which will eventually help in formulating the future strategy of Maruti Suzuki. If ever, launched in India, Maruti MR Wagon price will be somewhere under Rs 3 lakh.

Maruti MR Wagon review

MR Wagon is particularly a Japanese Kei car manufactured by Suzuki Motors. Kei cars, also called as K cars, are a Japanese iteration of small vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, and pickup trucks. They are designed to comply with Japanese government tax and insurance regulations, and in most rural areas are exempted from the requirement to certify that adequate parking is available for the vehicle.

The Maruti MR Wagon is planned for the 2012 Indian Auto Expo in January along with another Kei car Palette. The Suzuki MR Wagon comes on a mini MPV body with a seating capacity for four, manufactured by Suzuki for the Japanese market only. The box-shaped car does not actually look like a small car and resembles more like a minivan. Kei cars are especially advantaged class of cars that were developed to promote popular motorization in the post war era. While successful at Japan, the genre is generally too specialized and too small to be profitable in export markets. Maruti Suzuki has lined up MR Wagon along with Palette at the auto expo 2012 to gauge public response which will eventually help in formulating their future strategy in India. The initial trade reports say that if it ever makes it to Indian market it will be the smallest vehicles to be sold by Maruti Suzuki in India.

MR Wagon measures about 890 kilograms in weight. The city car promises high fuel efficiency with a three pot petrol engine capable of delivering more than 22 Kmpl in Japanese conditions. Looks apart, the car is absolutely perfect in practical sense. MR Wagon houses a R06A model number petrol engine with a miniscule displacement of 657cc available in both turbocharged and a naturally aspirated form. Coming to the performance of each, the turbocharged version produces 60 BHP power and a peak torque of 97 Nm while on the other hand aspirated engine produces 54 Bhp power and 64Nm torque. Seeing its small engine, initially it was abuzz in the market that this car will be brought in Indian market as Tata Nano competitor. But soon it was realized that Maruti Suzuki has no such plans and that the kei car will just be here for display. It was gathered from official sources that Maruti Suzuki dropped the plan of bringing in this kei car as the company felt that the price of this car does not befit the budget of majority of Indian buyers. According to Maruti chairman, Indian customers usually associate the engine capacity with the price of a car while buying. He also cleared that these kei cars are not like the Nano, but are much more sophisticated with a technology level much higher than that, featuring aluminum engines. Initially it was cogitated that these cars would carry a price tag of up to Rs 5-6 lakh along with the tax incentives. But now, at the Auto Expo customers would be asked how much they would ideally want to pay for these cars.
