The Nissan Jonga was a military vehicle used by the Indian Army based on an older-generation of the Nissan Patrol SUV. It was in production from the mid 1960s until just before 2000. The name JONGA is an acronym for Jabalpur Ordnance and Guncarriage Assembly and was built at a vehicle factory in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
The Jonga was renowned for its rugged abilities and high ground clearance. It was reportedly modified for various purposes when used by the Indian armed forces with a reliable powertrain - a 4.0-litre, in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine that produced 112PS of power and 264Nm of torque. It had 4WD with a 3-speed gearbox and a 2-speed transfer case.
While the Jonga was almost exclusively built and supplied to the military, a small batch of them was made available for sale to civilians as well. Since its discontinuation from service and production, many Jongas were scrapped while some have been maintained as classics.
