Fiat Grande Punto 90hp Sport
It is just only about a year ago when Fiat got the Grande Punto to the Indian car market, which surely raised many eyebrows, who would have never even expected that a car maker like Fiat, will offer such a premium feature laden hatchback at an unbelievable and affordable price tag. The Punto mesmerized the hatchback segment with its stunning Italian design and features along with good build quality giving sleepless nights to already established rivals from Maruti to Hyundai and many others. It is available in 1.2 Petrol, 1.4 Petrol and 1.3 Multijet Diesel engine options. Still, a few power hungry Fiat fans thought that the Punto could do better if more power was provided to its Diesel version and as a result, to mark this car’s first anniversary in India, the company released the Fiat Grande Punto 90hp with a more powerful engine. We drive the Fiat Punto 90hp and try to study how the Punto behalves with the increase in power and torque.

The Fiat Punto 90hp looks identical to the regular Punto, The 90 HP version does not have much difference from its powerful sibling except for the 90hp decals on the boot and the upsized 195/60 R 15 tyres on a very sporty looking alloy, ah yes the door handles are in chrome and the car we tested came with the sporty Team Fiat body graphics all around including the bonnet. The Fiat Punto 90hp is a very good looking car and there is definitely a lot in the styling which could force you to look at it again and again, at first sight, it is the cute droplet design headlamps which grab the attention quickly, followed by the silver painted dual split grille which remind of the Maserati which also hails from the same family and yes also the Linea as both the Punto and the Linea are based on the same platform with typical Italian design all around.

The flared out wheel arches adds to the much required muscular looks of the car, but thankfully there’s no overuse of physique or lines to spoil the beauty and shape. A high waistline on the Punto adds to the overall muscularity on the sides. Coming to the rear end as mentioned before, there is nothing much to distinguish between the Punto and the 90hp Punto except for the 90 HP inscribed on the boot-lid. The car looks equally sporty from the front, high mounted stop lamps add to the sportiness. Apart from the tail lamps, a couple of rectangular reflectors and reverse lamps are neatly placed on the lower side of the rear bumper.

As mentioned earlier, there is not much different between the new and the old version n terms of the exteriors and since this specific model is available only with Emotion variant, features like Alloy wheels etc, comes standard. One can also opt for the option pack which includes body decals, aluminum pedals, leather seats, door sills as a part of the long list of accessories that the Fiat Punto 90hp can be customized with.

Step in and you instantly notice the amount of space that the Puntos cabin has. Our test car came with perforated leather seats in all black with the stitches in red which looked very sporty. The driver’s seat has manual height adjust. The front seats are on the better side and offer good comfort and support. The three spoke steering wheel is chunky to grip and comes with the steering mounted music control buttons along with the blue and me control buttons. A lot of components are carried over from the Linea which is a good thing for Punto buyers. The dashboard is made up in two tone plastic material with a mix of black and grey and has a chrome strip running across. The instrument cluster is easy to read and again is the same as that of the other Punto and the Linea. The centre console has the MP3 Radio system and the single zone climate control with digital display. The use of chrome continues on the door handles which feel and work rather well. The other major feature on the Fiat Punto 90Hp is the Blue & Me. Blue & Me is a infotainment system for Fiat Group cars developed by Microsoft. You can easily connect your mobile phone via Bluetooth with the onboard system and make or receive calls hands free simply by voice commands. The 90hp has the same gear stalk as the Fiat Linea. The gear shifter has a good feel when gripped. The view from the drivers seat is good thanks to the height adjust on the seat and the huge glass area on the Punto. The front quarter glass comes to aid when turning or driving through busy streets. The rear seat is comfortable for two while a third person can also fit in if needed. Leg room and head room are more than good while the shoulder room is best with two passengers on the rear seat. Fiat engineers must be given a pat on their back for the much improved quality and fit-finish on the Fiat Punto 90hp.

Coming to the most interesting part of the Fiat Punto 90hp, powered by the same 1248cc Multijet Diesel engine but with a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) on it. This is the very same engine that also drives the Linea Diesel. The VGT Multijet engine makes 93PS @ 4000rpm and generates 209 Nm of torque at 2000rpm as compared to the non VGT Punto that makes 76PS of power and has 197Nm of torque. The Lineas VGT engine now coming in the Punto means tremendous power to weight advantage as Punto is nearly 100kgs lighter to the Linea. We are told that the Fiat engineers have tweaked the Engine Control Unit and modified the Noise Vibration and Harshness package on the Fiat Punto 90Hp. Floor the throttle and you instantly realize the extra horses that the 90hp has gained. The VGT comes fully alive at about 2200rpm, this is when you experience the real difference. There is nearly no turbo lag as compared to the non VGT Punto. The VGT infact stands as a shield and balances the engine power and minimizes the lag to a fairly negligible level. The 90Hp has a very strong mid range power delivery that stays on for a long time. The overall power going up by 15bhp makes the performance figures also much better on the 90Hp. However, the in-gear acceleration times are virtually identical, making it hard to notice the power increase in everyday driving. The engine note is a bit heavier as compared to the non VGT Punto. The gear ratio is same as that on the Linea. The gear shifts are a pleasure to use and no wrong shifts that we experienced during our tests. The Fiat Punto 90Hp suspension set up consists of the traditional McPherson Struts, Helical Springs, Double acting Telescopic dampers with Stabilizer bar at the front and Torsion beam, Helical Springs and Double Acting double dampers at the rear that do a very fine job of soaking up most of the bumps and potholes that it encounters. Not forgetting the meaty tyres and the upsized alloys that do a wonderful job in ensuring a very comfortable drive. The braking setup remains the same with ventilated discs in the front and drums at the rear, we would have loved to have an all disc setup but never the less the current setup also works just fine aided with ABS and EBD that ensure a sure stop. Body roll is minimal and the Fiat Punto 90Hp behaves like a much bigger sedan at all times. Handling of the Fiats has always been good and the Punto 90Hp is one more addition to the list. Overall the Fiat Punto 90hp is a very good performer in busy city lanes and on high speed runs on the highway.
The Fiat Punto 90Hp according to ARAI offers 20kmpl while in real world daily traffic and mixed driving conditions the 90Hp offered 16.5kmpl which is commendable.

The Fiat Punto 90Hp has a long list of safety features to its standard list, infact the safety list on the 90Hp is nearly same to the Linea. The car is equipped with the Fire Prevention system, Coded Immobilizer, Speed sensitive door locking, Front airbags, ABS and EBD braking.

The Fiat Punto 90HP is a lot quicker as compared to the 75HP non VGT Punto. The best performance is seen on the highway where you’ll find the extra power that the 90Hp gives combined with the phenomenal ride and handling characteristics that the Punto is always known for combined with a very good fuel efficiency. With the extra power and the other improvements to the Punto now make is much more complete and much more powerful. The Fiat Punto 90Hp now is all ready to give some serious competition to the likes of Hyundai i20 which was the most powerful diesel hot hatch until the Punto 90Hp arrived making it the perfect option to those who want a powerful European Diesel Hot-hatch.

Gud review !! But how the service issues are being addressed. Initially lot of problem especially on AC performance & steering noise were registered. Br, Subh
Rest assured all the flaws and toothing issues have been sorted out now, the after sales and service part is also much better now.
I am looking to buy the Petrol 1.4 Punto Emotion Pack in Chennai. My running is around 1500 kms per month Max , city 1200 km and Highways 300 km.I liked the look and feel of the car when i test drove the same.A mileage of at least 11 km in city condtions is what i am looking at and i like the Petrol refinement cars over the diesels. The features are very good and the price looks OK.Heard the car has to be taken for repairs very often to the workshop and parts are not avbl with the Tatas and the srvice is awful.I am not prepared to take this point since i do not want a new car having this problem.Or i am prepared to wait for the New Swift coming out soon.Or the Fabia Or the Polo. These cars are normally trouble free .I normally do not sell my cars, my Maruti 800 is 6 yrs old and my Opel Corsa is 11 yrs old.I am not looking at the resale value. Is Punto launching the Evo Punto? I am not in a hurry to buy a new car, i am prepared to wait for a good hatchback with SAFETY features and good handling.Dual Airbags, Alloy wheels, 15 inches tyres,Music System,Climatic Ac,Rear Defogger,Blue Me etc are a must in my car.I saw a New car Petrol Punto Emotion Pack of 2009 model ( Euro 3 ) with a Fiat Dealer in Chennai. It fits in my budget of 5.50 lacs On Road, which the dealer ies prepared to offer .The 2011 model with the discount is offered at 6.50 lacs on road.Is the Petrol of Punto Emotion Pack 1.4 a good option Or do i wait for the K series engines of the New Swift? I heard that Fiat Diesels cars alone are good and the Petrol versions are a failure.Incidentially the car should also be driven easily by a Lady in City traffic.I found the Rear View of the Punto was very poor, hence would like to fix a Rear view camera if ai buy a Punto.Swifts/Fabias Rear View vision was good.Which car do you suggest? Pl advice
why dont buy punto car? can i have ur feedback before i buy this car!
Gud Review !!
very nice car.
Hello ! every body. I read all views and time to time I write my comment. Grande Punto is really very nice car.No doubt. But Fiat should think why Maruti Swift sale is so high. Fiat has to win customer's heart. Fiat should become a place in people heart and mind. They should win people believe. I think Fiat management understand my consept to say. Spare parts cost is very important. Thanks.
I am sure many Fiat officials would be reading this review and making a note of your valuable feedback.
pl tell me which is better car- fiat grand punto or honda city. swift is a failure , i heard as its mileage is very low!!
punto punto punto punto...just go ahead n book it!! go for 1.3 diesel emotion..90bhp..grey colour!! all the best!!
ya mileage is low then swift figo polo i20
ya fiat cars are very durable.. but fiat is doubting to entering into indian market completely...do it as ford done with figo
I can state that being the proud owner of Fiat 90HP Multijet the drivability is phenomenal in the city traffic conditions. The high torque of the engine and the non linear gear ration offers a pleasure by way of limited gear changes, good pick up which is not matched in any of the other cars of its catagory. The power offers a more than a match to the petrol cars and is a pleasure to be experienced rather than in words as I am fond of driving all the time. My drive to Bangalore from Chennai and back in the same day was a real pleasure and the mileage offered at at near 100kmph speeds is more than 20km/litre. It is an amazing car. The onely trouble that it has that Fiat has to work on is the blue & me which sometime gets stuck and does not do its duty.
I am an owner of Fiat Grande Punto 90hp. I can clearly tell every one looking for a good car that this is the car you are looking for. Due to current situation of hiking Fuel Prices, the multijet diesel engine is good for maintaining the fuel budget for an average family. The power that the engine produces is really unbelievable for such a small car. The mileage of the car is more than 18 kmpl even if you are going at a speed of 120 kmph with AC. If going at an average speed of 70-80 kmph you can attain a dream mileage of 24- 25 kmpl. The cooling of AC cannot be matched with any other car. Fiat India has to open seperate show rooms for their cars. Because TATA motors is not dealing properly with Fiat customers. The service provided to Fiat Cars by TATA motors also is cheap. They are trying to promote their Cars.....
yes u r rite dinuraj!! such a solid built car built for indian roads!! a good overall car!!
Hi Dinuraj... Can you please send me your contact number. I would like to speak with you for the Grande Punto... I am thinking of this, but getting mixed reviews. Would prefer speaking to a car owner.
Dear Dinuraj, I have recently booked the new swift ZDi and i went for a test drive on the FIAT 90 HP Punto and i have fallen in love with the Punto.. even my sister is convinced that this car is beautiful. I can tell you this given the feedback and reviews i have come across it is very mixed. I would like to get a car owners perspective on this ..I would like to speak to you about the punto 90 HP and I want to know how your ownership experience has been so far... given that this is a car you buy with your heart not with your brain... coz my brain tells to go with the swift and my heart goes with the Punto 90 HP ... Please advise

It is only because you dont know how to drive the car...
dear its only because u dont know how to drive. to overtake what need is courage nothing else
DUDE...I THINK U HAVE MISTAKEN IT...U BOUGHT A 90BHP PUNTO...WHICH FUEL U FILL?? PETROL, DIESEL, NOS, SULPHUR, GAS OR ??? RITZ IS A PETROL CAR N WILL EASILY OVERTAKE DIESEL CARS!! IF U BUY PUNTO 1.4 PETROL..THEN U COME TO KNOW! :):):)
I agree with the Others Comment. All You need is courage to Overtake. I have completed 41k KM's in a year driving Punto Diesel. And Never had any one overtaking me. And i have Surpassed others at will and had got the appropriate pickup and support from My Car(Punto Diesel). Have received appreciations from the ones who i raced with on my driving and as well as on Cars Pickup..... Simply Amazing control and Mileage.... Go For it. The Driving Control & Comfort is unmatched by any other brand in the segment. Figo/ Swift is not match for the Punto.
GUYS..I HAVE DRIVEN MANY CARS TILL NOW N HAVE MUCH KNOWLEDGE OF IT..ALL CARS ARE GOOD..SERVICE ARE GOOD..SPARES ARE EXPENSIVE INCLUDING LABOUR! SO DONT LISTEN TO THOSE NARROW MINDED PEOPLE WHO SAYS THIS COMPANY SERVICE IS VERY BAD..IF U LIKE THIS CAR..TAKE A TEST DRIVE N THINK ABOUT IT!! PUNTO A WELL SOLID BUILT CAR BUILT FOR INDIAN ROADS!!!

I've already cancelled the new Swift, Punto is awesome, last sunday me and myfriend took it for testdrive,we took the car speed to 175KMH what a road grip the car has and the tried with sudden break. You cant compare Punto with Swift or Ritz, Suzuki will go in 150 but next minute we will not be there to drive
I have learned to drive a car in may 2011 and brought a 90hp punto in july 2011. This car is amazing and very easy to drive. Its a monster on the highway overtaking all the sedans. No issues till now. Pleasure to drive it. only problems are the music system and blue and me which doesnt work properly. As the car is lenthy, its bit hard for reverse parking. otherwise an excelent car.
All who says dont buy punto means they never drive any Fiat in thier lifetime. . . . n guys who stays in metro cities can freely buy this gem . .. maruti yea cheaper to maintain but spare costs are overall comes in the same category. . . n look @ the comments given by punto drivers. . . n many opt polo !!! arre when ppl talk about spare cost services about FIAT .. Do they think VW is very cheap than FIAT n that too for 3pot cul . . . just have heart n drive this car . . .u get every thing in one package,, punto 90hp

Confusion between punto 90HP or i20.Friends let me know which is the best
