Uttarakhand Government Sets Up EV Chargers Along The Char Dham Yatra Route For Greener Mobility

The government has already established charging infrastructure at 25 places, which is going to be expanded to 38 in coming times

In a move to encourage Char Dham Yatra pilgrims to adopt electric vehicles for their journeys, the Uttarakhand Government has set up 25 EV chargers along the route. The Chief Minister of state, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has further announced that the total count of chargers will go up to 38 in the coming times, underlining the government’s push towards easier adoption and usage of EVs. The EV charging stations are universal in nature and have a total capacity of 60 kW charging, which is divided into two 30 kW charging guns at all places. Most of the EV charging stations have been built on Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) property along the pilgrimage route.

That being said, out of the total 38 EV chargers, 28 are being managed by the Uttarakhand Transport Department, while the rest 10 will be overseen by the THDC (Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited). As mentioned earlier, 25 EV chargers are currently serving the general public.

This move backs the government’s initiative of a green yatra that underlines a considerable effort to make the pilgrimage more eco-friendly than before.

The Char Dham Yatra is a journey of four Hindu pilgrimages that are located in the state of Uttarakhand. These shrines include the Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Every year, this pilgrimage circuit draws around 40 lakh Hindu devotees to the state of Uttarakhand. Hence, the government’s move to encourage people to use EVs is definitely going to lower carbon emissions and push green mobility.

In 2025, the Yatra has already begun and will be conducted till the first week of November. However, the closing date might vary according to the climatic conditions of the regions.
