Evolution: Tata Nano

Tata Nano launch was one of the biggest automotive launch that our country has witnessed. Journalists had flown in from different continents and the entire world was curious to know that how can a car be priced at one lakh rupees. Mr. Ratan Tata while launching the Nano at the 2008 Auto Expo in New Delhi said that we have given the country an affordable car and "major part of the country will be able to sit in it".  It was popularly known as ‘Lakhtakiya’ which means a one lakh rupee car. It might not offer you too much power or luxury, but the main USP of the Nano is the price tag that it carries. Nano manages to give a comfortable ride for 4 adults and also offers good fuel economy. The Nano Project was more like a challenge to Tata Motors that the company successfully accomplished by delivering on the one lakh rupee car promise! So lets take a look in to the history of Tata Nano.

Tata Nano Gen 1 (2008)

The car was launched with a 624cc Petrol motor that produced 33 Bhp of power. It also was the country’s most fuel efficient car then with an ARAI figure of 23.1 kmpl. The car’s engine was placed in the rear and was rear wheel drive as well.

Tata Nano Twist XT (2014)

Nano got a power steering with this generation change. This made the Nano even more drivable in city conditions. The car also got rich in features with the inculcation of Bluetooth audio system with 4 speakers and Multi information display system. The clutch pedal position was also made better to improve the car’s drivability.

Tata Nano GEN X (2015)

With rising demand for automatics in our country, Tata Motors decided to plant an Automatic gearbox in the Nano. The AMT gearbox is 5 speed as compared to the manual transmission which is 4 speed. Cosmetically the Nano Gen X was upgraded. Smoked headlamps, Infinity motif grille and a spoiler were the few additions the Gen X saw. Powering the Gen X is the same 624 cc MPFi petrol motor which has been slightly tweaked for a marginal increase in power.

This generation also saw an OTG- Openable Tailgate for the Nano.
