The Thar, XUV700 and Scorpio N are still the most awaited models, with a wait time of over six months

To cope with its high waiting period woes, Mahindra has confirmed it will ramp up its monthly production capacity at its recently held investor meeting. The process would take over six months, but will lead to a drop in the waiting period in the future.

Mahindra currently has an overall production capacity of 39,000 units per month as stated by the brand’s representatives, but only around 34,000 units are produced. However, the SUV maker plans to step up production to around 49,000 units per month by the end of 2023. For reference, Tata currently produces around 50,000 units a month, while Hyundai averages around 70,000 units per month.

As of May 1, Mahindra already had a high order backlog of around three lakh units. Besides, its recently launched SUVs – like the Scorpio N and XUV700 – already command a wait time of over six months in several cities. So, there are high chances that if you book the car now (on the date of publishing this article), you may get it in 2024. The Thar’s waiting time is lower than the other two, averaging around 3-4 months. The entry-level rear-wheel drive variants are in high demand, with a wait time of up to a year.

The high waiting period is one of the prime reasons why Mahindra isn’t planning any new launches in 2023. Besides, the SUV maker said it’s still dealing with the semiconductor shortages, a common problem still being faced by most other carmakers as well, resulting in high waiting periods for all tech-laden models.
