Renault Cars in India

Founded in the year 1899 as Societe Renault Freres by the three Renault brothers - Louis, Marcel and Fernand, Renault S.A. is a multinational car manufacturing company based in France. Although, officially, the company's foundation stone was laid in 1899, the first car to be sold with the Renault badge can be traced back to the year 1898. This first Renault car, which was called as the Renault Voiturette 1CV was designed and built by Louis Renault himself. Being a brilliant young engineer of his time, Louis had created several models of his own even before he joined hands with his brothers to bring the Renault car company into being, the first of which was the Voiturette, later bought by a friend of the founding brothers' father.

By the time 1903 dawned, Renault had started manufacturing engines of its own design, and within a span of two years from then, the company had succeeded in making its first big sale when the Societe des Automobiles de Place bought an entire fleet of Renault AG1 cars to convert them into taxis. The year 1908 proved to be a major milestone in the history of Renault cars, when the less-than-a-decade-old automaker crossed the production mark of 3,575 units, claiming the top spot, in terms of volume, amongst the car-manufacturers of France.

Apart from car manufacturing, this French auto-giant has also been an active participant of the motor racing sport right from its very early days, a major attraction towards the activity being the immense popularity that it provided. Beginning with the founding members, Louis and Marcel Renault, themselves racing their own vehicles and succeeding wonderfully in the first city-to-city race organised in Switzerland, to the glorious victory that the Renault AK 90CV brought Ferenc Szisz in the inaugural Grand Prix motor racing event, right up to the 2010 Formula One race where Renault powered the winning team, the Red Bull Racing, there have been countless racing events and championships over the past decades where the winner's trophy has had the name of Renault etched over it.

The maiden venture that Renault made in the Indian car-market was its partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra, which resulted in the formation of Mahindra Renault Limited in 2005 and the launch of the first of the Renault cars in India, the Logan, in May 2007. Although this JV came to an end in February 2010, the Logan continued to be manufactured by Mahindra, with Renault supporting it with some key components of production. The new and immensely improved version of Renault Logan which was thus formed is an extremely popular choice of Indian men in sedans today and is currently known by the name of Mahindra Verito.

Following this break-up, the car-major from France went on to re-establish itself in the country and laid the foundation for Renault India Private Limited in October 2010. Headquartered in the Mumbai city, Renault in India has production facilities located in Tamil Nadu, one of which is the unit that was set up jointly by Renault India and Nissan India as part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance operations in Chennai in March 2010. Capable of chucking out as many as 400,000 vehicles every year, this particular facility, along with its staggering production capacity, is shared equally by the two owner companies. Not only that, in September 2008, Renault inaugurated its satellite global vehicle design studio in Mumbai, which was just the fifth of its kind. Apart from the manufacturing base, the French automaker also has a pretty widespread network of dealerships and service centers in the country, which presently comprises of at least 60 touch points across 16 states and 2 Union Territories.
