Isuzu Cars in India

Headquartered in the capital city of Tokyo, Isuzu Motors Ltd . is a Japanese automotive company that has been involved in the production of cars, commercial vehicles and heavy trucks ever since its inception in 1916. The company has its production and assembly units located in Fujisawa, Tochigi and Hokkaidō and is known around the world specifically for its remarkable range of commercial vehicles and diesel engines. Although these diesel engines are found under the hoods of innumerable vehicles across the globe branded with the insignia of many different marques, the Renault-Nissan Alliance and General Motors have always been their biggest buyers.

Over the long years of its existence, Isuzu has engaged in several joint ventures, including those with Wolseley Motors Limited, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Fuji Heavy Industries, but it was the association with General Motors, initiated in 1971, that proved to be one of the most fruitful and long-lasting partnerships. During its association with the USA-based automaker, General Motors, Isuzu Motor Ltd. took part in the manufacture of a number of prominent car models, starting from the Chevrolet LUV, to Buick's Opel, to Holden's Statesman, to Isuzu P'Up amongst several others, which were sold in different parts of the world under many different names and badges. In fact, the well-known MPV, Chevrolet Tavera, which is quite popular in India is nothing but the van named Panther that was created by Isuzu and badged as a Chevy for the Indian market.

Talking about the Indian market, Isuzu has been a major part of the Indian auto-world since 2006, when it went into a technical agreement with the automobile company, Swaraj Mazda, for the production of commercial vehicles. Later, when Mazda pulled out of the JV and the title of Swaraj was sold to Mahindra & Mahindra, Isuzu Motors Ltd., in cooperation with the Japanese owner group, Sumitomo Corporation, of Swaraj Mazda, gave the original venture a new avatar, renaming it as SML Isuzu Limited in 2011. Till now, this company has been known and commended mainly for its smart and sturdy commercial vehicles in India. But the manufacturer is now planning on expanding its portfolio and clearing a spot for itself in the rapidly growing car market of the country. That's the reason why Isuzu has introduced two new products in India – the MU-7 SUV and the company's best-seller D-Max pick-up truck (single and double cab version).

With bookings already open for these two vehicles, they will presently be arriving via the CBU route from Thailand, to be manufactured in the country as soon as the company sets up its production facilities here. And while the work is already on the go for a manufacturing site in Chittor District in Andhra Pradesh and for dealerships in Delhi and Hyderabad, the company plans on establishing several other units across the major cities of the country over the coming days.
