Volkswagen Cars in India

The German auto giant's Indian arm is known as Volkswagen India Private Limited, and is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Limited. Volkswagen Group India is a part of Volkswagen AG, which is comprised of 9 brands: Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Scania, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Volkswagen Passenger Cars. However, the Volkswagen Group in India represents only three brands, i.e. Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda. While Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Limited forayed into India way back in 2001 with Skoda, Volkswagen India Private Limited wasn't established until 2007. Volkswagen India is involved in the manufacture, assembly and distribution of Volkswagen cars in India.

This highly desirable Volkswagen cars made a successful entry into the Indian market with the Volkswagen Passat in 2007. Ever since then, Volkswagen cars in India have grown to cover a variety of segments with their high-volume models. Then, to expand its portfolio and cater to the mid segment, Volkswagen India launched one of the bestselling Volkswagen cars, the Volkswagen Jetta, in India in July 2008. Both the sedans, Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Jetta, are assembled locally. The iconic New Beetle and the high-end SUV Touareg were also introduced in December 2009, but both these Volkswagen cars were discontinued later. The much-loved Volkswagen Polo started its local manufacture run in Volkswagen India's manufacturing facility in Pune in 2009. The locally manufactured Volkswagen car was then unveiled at the Auto Expo 2010 in New Delhi. What makes this premium hatchback standout is the fact that the introduction of this Volkswagen car in India gave the company access to one of the Indian passenger car segments with the highest-volume unit sales.

The other crucial element in Volkswagen’s strategy in India is to establish a long-term presence in the country, and the their production facility near Pune in the Chakan Industrial Park is proof to just that. Volkswagen invested a total sum of around Rs 3,800 crore in the Pune facility, making it the biggest investment by a German company realized in India so far. Other than that, Volkswagen also recognizes the importance of an extensive dealer network and has dealerships for Volkswagen cars that span the entire country. The dealerships for Volkswagen cars in India have not only laid the foundation for a measurable increase in sales, but have also done the groundwork for offering a first-class all-round service, hence, taking customer satisfaction to the highest level. The recognition for its efforts in India came in the form of the coveted ‘Automotive Company of the Year 2010’ award at the Inaugural Golden Steering Wheel Awards India.
