Hyundai Cars in India

Hyundai Motor India Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of the South Korean Hyundai Motor Company in India, first set foot on Indian soil in May 1996 - a time when the country's automobile market was under the complete dominance of just five automakers, namely Maruti Udyog Limited (now Maruti Suzuki), Hindustan Motors, Premier Automobiles Limited, TELCO (now Tata Motors) and Mahindra & Mahindra, while the passenger car segment was practically ruled by none but Maruti. With Mahindra and Tata mainly involved in Utility and Commercial Vehicle manufacture and brands like Ford, Opel and Honda barely a year old in India, Hyundai, despite being a total newcomer in the country's auto-bazaar, became the one to challenge the decade-old undisputed supremacy of Maruti in the field of passenger cars.

The very first car that came out of the stables of Hyundai in India was the iconic Santro, launched on September 23, 1998 and an instant hit with the country's hatchback seekers. After that, it did not take more than a few months for the company to claim the position of the second largest automobile manufacturer and the largest automobile exporter in India, which it proudly holds on to even today. A key unit of Hyundai Motor Company's global export hub, Hyundai India crossed the staggering 1.5 million mark in exported units in March 2012 and presently oversees export operations in more than 120 countries across the globe covering the European Union, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and the Asia Pacific.

At present, Hyundai owns two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in India located near Chennai with a combined annual production capacity of 6,30,000 units. Employing the latest tools and technologies for production of vehicles, these manufacturing units are ranked amongst the most advanced production facilities in the country today and are known for their world-class quality standards and unmatched testing capabilities. In order to ensure that these impressive quality and technology standards are not only maintained but also improved with passing time, the Korean auto-giant has established a new-age multi-million dollar R&D center in the cyber city of Hyderabad. Maintenance of service quality standards for the countless buyers of Hyundai cars in India, in the meantime, is the responsibility of the massive network of nearly 346 dealerships and around 800 service centers that the car-major has established in the country.

As far as its parent company is concerned, HMC has been a major part of the automotive industry ever since 1967, when it was founded by a South Korean entrepreneur Chung Ju-Yung. Beginning its automotive journey in 1968 with a car called Cortina, which it had built in coordination with Ford Motor Company, Hyundai, since then, has come a very long way. Together with Kia it forms what is known as the Hyundai Motor Group, which ranks fourth in the list of the world's largest automobile manufacturers today. From its Seoul headquarters, the automaker sells vehicles in about 193 countries around the world with the help of an amazing worldwide dealership network of 6000 dealerships and showrooms. In order to meet the staggering demands for Hyundai cars across the globe, the company has also built itself the ultimate manufacturing facility in Ulsan, which is the largest integrated automobile production unit in the world and is capable of chucking out as many as 1.6 million units on an annual basis.
