Volkswagen Taigun 1.0 TSI AT Topline: Long Term Introduction

Published On Sep 26, 2022 By Alan Richard for Volkswagen Taigun

My first long-termer in over six years and it’s another Volkswagen! I’m keeping these keys to myself

The last time I had a long-term test car, it was the delightful Vento 1.5 DSG Diesel. That was over six years ago and I was working at another firm at that time. It was a delightful experience shuffling between Mumbai and Pune with the Vento. I completed many quick, frugal and memorable drives over the expressway back then.  Six years have brought a lot of changes too. For starters, I’m city-locked now and spend most of the week shuffling between office and work across Pune City. But that still equates to two-three hours of driving and 45 kilometres on average per day. So the Taigun is set to complete some proper city mileage duties.

On the flip side, since moving back home from Mumbai means that my weekends are relatively free. Free to make trips to the mall, short weekend excursions and maybe a couple of long-distance trips or two. So the Taigun will certainly have some things to look forward to as well, other than trundling through miles and miles of city traffic.

The first impressions are still the same as when the car came to us earlier for tests and reviews. It’s a very nice car in the city, it has all the creature comforts that keep you comfortable on an office commute with very little to complain about. I have to also say that the Volkswagen gearboxes are quite remarkable too. When the car first came to be, the 6-speed automatic was quite erratic in its behaviour. But then I remembered that these gearboxes constantly adapt to the driver’s driving style, and so I was patient with it for a few days. Either I improved my driving of the car or the gearbox worked some of its magic, but after a week of driving it, it now feels a lot smoother in operation.

And even though it’s the monsoons, I’m super happy with the ventilated seats. The paddle shifts, sunroof, snappy audio system and wireless android auto are also features I’m looking forward to enjoying. It’s going to be a fun two months.
