Overview
The 3 Series has been among BMW India’s best sellers in the country The previous generation (E90) kicked off the Bavarian automaker’s innings in India and quickly catapulted it to the top of the sales charts in the luxury space. It was only six years later - in 2012 - that BMW introduced the new generation of the 3 Series. BMW hasn’t reinvented the wheel with the new 3, they’ve simply tweaked the recipe to make it better. Have they succeeded?
Verdict
Among the barrage of options in the entry-level luxury car space, the BMW 3 Series is the one to pick if you enjoy driving more than anything else. It has the right blend of features, quality and space - but the driving dynamics outshine its immediate rivals by a considerable margin.

- Ride quality. Surprisingly forgiving for daily commutes, just about there for spirited driving.
- Shifts from the 8-speed ZF gearbox are lightning quick.
- Silky smooth petrol motor has enough grunt to keep you happy.
- Torquey diesel engine loves to be pushed hard. Can be quite fun to drive!
- Petrol variants priced on par with the diesel. Does not justify the price tag.
- Rear seat has average legroom and headroom. Best to be in the driver’s seat.

BMW 3 Series 2014-2019 latest updates
BMW 3 Series Shadow Edition: BMW has listed a new limited edition of the 3 Series sedan on its website. Called the 3 Series Shadow Edition, it is available in two variants - 320d Edition Sport and 330i M Sport, priced at Rs 41.40 lakh and Rs 47.40 lakh. Apart from these two, BMW also offers the diesel-powered 3 Series in the Prestige (base) and Luxury Line (top-spec) variants as well. Read More
Prices: BMW announced a price hike of up to 5.5 per cent across its lineup from April 1, 2018. While the new prices are yet to be announced, the 3 Series was priced between Rs 37.80 lakh and 45.20 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India) in February 2018.
Engines: The 320d is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that makes 190PS of power and 400Nm of torque. The 330i M Sport, on the other hand, gets a 2.0-litre petrol engine that makes 252PS of power and 350Nm of torque. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Features: The BMW 3 Series gets a host of comfort features that include a two-zone automatic climate control, an 8.7-inch infotainment display with BMW apps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and iDrive touch with handwriting recognition, a 205W 9-speaker sound system, a rear parking camera with front and rear sensors and cruise control with braking function.
Safety: The BMW 3 Series gets a host of safety equipment such as six airbags, ABS with brake assist, ISOFIX child seat anchors, BMW Condition Based Service, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Stability Control and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Competition: The BMW 3 series takes on likes of the Mercedes-Benz C Class, Audi A4 and the Volvo S60.
