Tata Nexon EV expert review
Overview
The Tata Nexon EV is the electric avatar of the standard Nexon. It is a proper modern-day EV with a feature-loaded and proven safety package, but it goes up against rivals that offer more space and practicality, while offering a similar list of creature comforts. So why should you consider the Nexon EV in 2025? Let’s find out:
Exterior
-
I like how the EV builds on the Nexon’s already modern design with its connected lighting elements.
-
The welcome and goodbye animations within the LED light bars look really cool at night.
-
The front styling is similar to the standard Nexon, but with closed off grille, different vertical slats for the bumper and a connected LED DRL element.
-
In profile, the aerodynamic 16-inch alloy wheels look futuristic. However, Tata could have opted for a different design for the EV.
-
Lower variants of the Nexon EV get 16-inch steel wheels with covers.
-
I like how the rear wipers have been cleanly hidden underneath the roof-mounted spoiler.
-
The X-shaped lightbar at the rear looks modern, while the split setup with the reversing lights placed in the corners accentuate the width of the car.
-
The Tata Nexon EV is available with various variant or persona specific colours. Only a single monotone Pristine White shade is offered, the rest are all dual tone shades.
-
The dual tone options include Daytona Grey, Flame Red, Pristine White, Fearless Purple, Empowered Exodus and Intensi Teal. Daytona Grey, and Flame Red shades are available with both black and white roof colours, depending on the variant.
-
I think the Fearless Purple shade really stands out, not just from the Nexon EV’s colour palette but also compared to its rivals.
-
There’s also an all-black Carbon Black colour available with the Red Dark edition, which looks really menacing.
Interior
Design & Quality
-
The Nexon EV’s cabin design looks premium with its minimalistic design.
-
Quality is acceptable, but finish could’ve been better in places as panels in gloss black are a scratch and dust magnet.
-
I like the option of having variant-specific interior colour themes, which stand out from the competition.
-
While there are some minor fit and finish inconsistencies, the overall design is modern and quality is premium.
-
Quality of the drive selector could have been better as it feels flimsy and does not match the quality of the rest of the cabin.
-
The red theme of the Nexon EV Red Dark looks really bright and bold.
Driving position
-
The front seats are wide and comfortable, but the back rest can feel a little short for those around or above 6 feet tall.
-
The Nexon EV doesn’t get telescopic steering adjustment, but despite that, finding a comfortable driving position is fairly simple.
-
Driver seat height adjustment and tilt steering adjustment are offered as standard features.
Passenger comfort
-
With batteries in the floor, rear occupants sit taller than the front passengers.
-
Apart from the compromised underthigh support, space is adequate even for tall people.
-
I found it’s best to seat 2 people in the Nexon EV’s second row for utmost comfort.
-
Rear seat amenities in the Nexon EV include rear AC vents, central armrest with cupholders, and a type-C charging port.
Storage spaces
-
The storage spaces in the Nexon EV are inconvenient.
-
Basics like door pockets, glovebox and cup holders in rear armrest are covered, but there’s no usable cup holder for the front passengers.
-
Instead, the cupholders have been placed in the glovebox compartment, which is just impractical.
-
The wireless charging pad fails to fit anything bigger than a standard-sized phone.
-
Rear passengers only get two cupholders in the central armrest, no seat back pockets.
-
Rear parcel tray isn’t offered as standard. It is available from the Fearless variant onwards.
Features
-
The 2025 Tata Nexon EV is a feature loaded package with many modern day features.
-
The 12.3-inch infotainment system offers great resolution and fast responses. But it does tend to glitch occasionally.
-
It also gets wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, which functions as intended.
-
The 10.25-inch digital driver’s display offers multiple views and has easy-to-understand interface. It also shows feed for the side view camera when indicated.
-
Front seat ventilation gets three levels and functions as intended. However, buttons are placed awkwardly on the side of the seat.
-
The 9-speaker JBL sound system has great audio quality with a 3D surround sound experience.
-
The panoramic sunroof extends till the second row, making the cabin feel large.
-
The 360-degree camera has great picture quality with different angles and 3D and 2D displays.
Safety
-
The Tata Nexon EV has received a full five-star rating from Bharat NCAP.
-
Safety features are abundant with a host of standard equipment and premium features like auto headlights, rain sensing wipers, fog lamps with cornering function, rear disk brakes and electronic parking brake with auto hold.
-
6 airbags, rear parking camera, and electronic stability program are offered as standard.
Boot Space
-
Nexon EV’s 350-litre boot space is enough for a full suitcase set (small, medium and large).
-
I found using smaller suitcases/bags helps utilize the boot better.
-
Rear seats have a 60:40 split, so you can keep more luggage or furniture if needed.
Performance
-
The Tata Nexon EV gets two battery packs: 30kWh (medium range) and 45kWh (long range).
-
Torque is constant at 215Nm between the two, but the smaller battery gets a 129PS motor, while the bigger pack gets a 144PS motor.
Battery pack | 30kWh | 45kWh |
Output | 129 PS / 215 Nm | 144 PS / 215 Nm |
Claimed range (MIDC Part 1+2) | 275 km | 489 km |
Fast charging capacity | 50kW | 60kW |
-
The Nexon EV is super easy to drive. The car crawls smoothly in traffic, the throttle doesn’t feel too urgent, and it won’t be scary for a new driver.
-
With instant performance, it is quick enough for all your city and highway drives.
-
With the 45kWh battery and its higher output, you feel the difference in acceleration while making a quick highway overspeed.
-
Brake energy regeneration is configurable via paddle shifters. Can use level 2 or level 3 in heavy city traffic. For smooth highways, level 1 or level 2 suffices.
-
With a real world range of 210km, the medium range model is best suited for city use only.
-
The bigger battery adds more real-world range of around 120km, which is critical for people wanting to do intercity or long distance roadtrips. Helps with range anxiety too.
-
60kW DC fast charging capability with the 45kWh battery can top up a range of more than 150kms in just 30 minutes.
-
I would pick the bigger 45kWh battery of the Nexon EV for its added performance, but mainly for the additional range.
Ride and Handling
-
I couldn’t find a way to unsettle the Nexon EV’s suspension.
-
The ride quality is so good that it absorbs all potholes and speedbreakers easily without causing any movement in the cabin.
-
The car remains stable even at high speeds.
-
While it remains stable around a fast corner, you do get noticeable body roll and it’s best to avoid a sudden direction change at high speeds.
Variants
-
The 2025 Tata Nexon EV can be had in three broad variants: Creative, Fearless, and Empowered.
Medium range variants:
Tata Nexon EV Creative + (medium range)
-
Base variant gets LED headlights, LED DRLs, and 16-inch steel wheels with covers.
-
The interior doesn’t look outright basic with touch sensitive AC control, two-spoke steering wheel and dual digital 7-inch screens.
-
It gets 4 speakers and wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
-
Functional features include power windows, push button start/stop, electrically adjustable outside mirrors, auto AC and steering mounted controls.
-
Standard safety features include 6 airbags, electronic stability program, reverse parking camera with sensor, and hill-hold control.
Tata Nexon EV Fearless (medium range)
-
More premium looks with LED projector headlights, connected LED DRLs and LED taillights, front fog lamps and 16-inch alloys with aero inserts. It also gets sequential turn indicators.
-
Adds more features like fully electric outside mirrors, cooled glovebox, Alexa voice assistance, rear AC vents, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and 8 speakers.
-
Premium interior feel with leatherette wrapped steering wheel and dual 10.25-inch infotainment system.
Tata Nexon EV Fearless+ (medium range)
-
Only adds new features like front central armrest, cruise control, and wireless phone charger.
-
Arcade.EV apps lets you play games and watch platforms like YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Hotstar when the car is parked.
Tata Nexon EV Fearless+ S (medium range)
-
Only packs three new features: Rain sensing wipers, auto headlamps, and voice assisted sunroof.
Tata Nexon EV Empowered (medium range)
-
Doesn’t get any cosmetic changes, but adds welcome and goodbye animations in the lights.
-
More premium interior feel with leatherette seats.
-
Feature highlights include ventilated seats, 9-speaker JBL sound system, air purifier, auto inside mirror, and rear central armrest.
-
Improved safety kit with 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, and a blind view monitor.
Long range variants:
Tata Nexon EV Creative (long range)
-
Features LED DRLs, LED headlights, 16-inch alloys with aero inserts and roof rails.
-
Cabin gets touch sensitive AC control, two-spoke steering wheel and dual digital 7-inch screens for a premium look.
-
Covers all basic functional features along with electrically adjustable outside mirrors, air purifier, and push button start/stop.
-
Gets dual 7-inch screens with wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
-
Boasts a better safety package than Creative MR with all disk brakes and electronic parking brake with auto hold.
Tata Nexon EV Fearless (long range)
-
Top-spec like styling with LED projector headlights, connected LED DRLs and LED taillights with sequential turn indicators, front fog lamps and 16-inch alloys with aero inserts.
-
Top additions include fully electric outside mirrors, cooled glovebox, rear AC vents, Alexa voice assistance, and 8 speakers.
-
Better entertainment package with dual 10.25-inch digital screens with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
-
Adds rear wiper and washer to the safety kit.
Tata Nexon EV Empowered (long range)
-
Same exterior, but more premium interior with leatherette seats, and voice-assisted sunroof.
-
Packs more functional features like cruise control, front and rear central armrest, auto headlamps, and wireless phone charger.
-
Spare wheel available from this variant.
-
Improves safety kit with front parking sensors, auto dimming IRVM, rain sensing wipers and tyre pressure monitoring system.
Tata Nexon EV Empowered + (long range)
-
Adds welcome and goodbye function in the LED lighting elements.
-
Only variant to get a frunk and features like the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology.
-
Top features include a 12.3-inch infotainment system with a 9-speaker JBL sound system, front ventilated seats, and voice-assisted panoramic sunroof.
-
The Red Dark edition of the Nexon EV is available in this variant only.
CarDekho recommends:
-
If you’re on a budget and need an EV primarily for city usage, the Empowered medium range variant will be the most value for money option.
-
If you need that added range of the bigger battery, the Fearless 45 variant covers all functional and a few premium features at an acceptable price.
Verdict
Is the Tata Nexon EV right for you?
The Nexon EV seems like the perfect electric SUV for a small family with its features, comfort and performance. The medium range (30kWh) model is good for city use, while the bigger battery (45kWh) gives you the extra range needed for those long roadtrips. Only if the tech package works without glitches, recommending the Nexon EV would be even easier.
