Chevrolet Spark 800

The upcoming car Chevrolet Spark 800 is basically a smaller version of current Spark hatchback. This B segment car made its first news back in 2008. Chevrolet wishes to get into the ultra compact segment with the help of an all new 800 cc Spark. Although experts point that this can launch in 2012, there has been no news coming out of Chevrolet’s premise. The engine in this car will be the same which use to adorn Matiz-the hatchback car from Daewoo through which General Motors used to operate in India before the arrival of Chevrolet. 

The company planned to roll out its compact car from its Talegaon unit. The Chevrolet Spark 800 will inherit the erstwhile Matiz’s 796cc, 50 Bhp engine that was pretty high tech with 4 valves per cylinder and MPFI, when it was first launched a decade ago. It is speculated that Chevrolet Spark 800 will come powered with a 795cc, 6-valve unit pumps out 38KW power and torque of 68.6 Nm@4600 rpm. The new Chevrolet Spark 800cc engine with 3 cylinders is expected to be extra fuel efficient and some very practical interior packaging. The current Spark which was launched in 2007 is packed with a big 995cc engine. The 1 litre S-Tec petrol engine with five speed manual gearbox produces generous power of 63bhp at 5400rpm and maximum torque of 90.3Nm at 4200rpm in Chevrolet Spark. GM once said that the company has powertrain facility that can produce different types of engines.

The downsized engine of about 800 cc will take Spark in the league of market leader Maruti Alto and small car Hyundai Eon. Spark 800 will definitely strike a chord with customers as it will also be cheaper than the current Spark. Experts believe that the company can tag it at Rs 2.5 lakh making it yet more affordable for small Indian families. Moreover the new engine will give a 10% hike in fuel economy which will certainly translate into considerable savings for pockets. Spark itself is a big-seller from Chevrolet’s fleet of cars and the new smaller version will further escalate these numbers.

Since this car will cut an affordable price, few luxury features are expected to be missing from it. It will be difficult to see safety features like Airbags, ABS, Fog lamps and comfort features like AC, Power windows, central locking, music system, tinted glass and many other things. It is gestated that five seater hatchback will surely inherit a lot of features from Spark also. So if Chevrolet plays all its cards well, it can intensify competition between in compact car segment with its Chevrolet Spark 800. If Spark has walked a mile, the new variant with tweaked engine will definitely walk an extra mile in automobile market of India.
