The sub-4 metre compact sedan segment is one the fastest growing spaces in the Indian automobile market While it now has offerings from Maruti, Honda, Hyundai and Ford, the segment was started by the Indigo eCS. The humble Tata sedan has plied on Indian roads for over a decade and has become a favorite for fleet operators. Here’s what makes this workhorse an Indian favourite.
Verdict
There’s no getting around the fact that the Indigo is showing its age.
However, if you are looking at buying a private vehicle, there are better and more modern options available in the same price range.

Things We Like
- Fuel efficient diesel motor keeps the wallet happy. ARAI-certified efficiency = 25kmpl
- Comfortable low-speed ride quality. Decent bad road ability for semi-urban/rural India.
Things We Don't Like
- No airbags offered even as an option.
- Looks and feels outdated on the inside-out. Average build quality too.

Tata Indigo Offer: The Tata Indigo eCS, the pioneer of sub-4m compact sedans in India, is being offered with huge benefits of over Rs 50,000 under the company’s April offers. Read more about it here.
Tata Indigo Price and Engine: Priced in the range of Rs 5.09 lakh - Rs 6.28 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Tata Indigo is available in two variants - LS and LX. The 1.4-litre diesel engine that it shares with the Indica eV2 puts out 70PS of max power and 140Nm of max torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, offered as standard. The Indigo returns a company-claimed mileage of 25kmpl.
Tata Indigo Features: It gets keyless entry, central locking, child safety lock on rear doors, AC, power windows, remote boot and fuel lid opener, dual chamber headlamps, rear fog lamps, internally adjustable ORVMs (outside rear view mirrors) and tachometer.
Tata Indigo Competition: Frankly speaking, the ageing design and shortage of features leaves the Indigo way behind the competition. With respect to prices, it goes up against the Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Ford Aspire.
