India’s most selling MPV, the Toyota Innova, is all set to receive a major revamp next week. On sale for over a decade now (read its evolution here), the Innova has redefined Toyota’s fate in the country and set the bar for an ideal people carrier. It is called the Innova Crysta now and comes loaded with a whole lot of changes to justify the ‘next gen’ tag. What exactly has changed? We compare (spec-based) the existing and new model to find out.

Dimensions:

The Innova Crysta is based on an all-new platform – the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which according to the carmaker – is lighter and stiffer than the existing model’s platform. Also, it is longer, wider and taller measuring 4735mm in length, 1830mm in width and 1795mm in height. However, the wheelbase remains identical at 2750mm.

Design:

Toyota has managed well to differentiate the Crysta MPV and the outgoing Innova. It gets a new front fascia, featuring a large dual-slat chrome grille, reworked bumper, projectors, and LED daytime running lights. At a singular glance, the side profile might look familiar, but a closer look reveals some important tweaks such as a sharp cut on the last row windows and larger alloy wheels that provides the side profile a mature appeal. The rear has received a touch-up with revised bumper, modern tail lights and a new tailgate design.

Interiors:

While the interiors of the current Innova looks dated and lacks on modern equipments, cabin of the Crysta gets all the bells and whistles (Toyota Innova Crysta Brochure Leaked) you’d expect from a vehicle of this segment and price. The dash layout is aesthetically appealing and the dual-tone interiors with wood accents come as an icing on the cake. Leather upholstery, Smart Entry and touchscreen infotainment unit with voice command support, and Bluetooth, USB as well as AUX connectivity also makes its way to the Crysta’s cabin (in the upper variants of course).

Mechanicals:

The biggest revision in the Innova Crysta (apart from the new interiors) comes in the form of new powerplants. The Crysta will offer two engine options – 2.4- and 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged mills, while the current model only comes with a 2.5-litre unit.

The engines are newer and lighter, and thus churns out more power as well as deliver better fuel efficiency. The 2.4-litre engine will put out a max 149 PS of power and 343Nm of peak torque – 49PS and 160Nm more than the current model. The mill will come coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox and will be offered in five variants. The bigger 2.8-litre engine will make 174PS of peak power along with 360Nm of peak torque. It will come mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and will be available in two variants. The fuel efficiency figures are yet to be revealed, but we expect it to be on a higher side as against the outgoing model. The figures will be soon verified in our upcoming detailed Innova Crysta review.

Pricing:

The MPV will launch on 2nd May and the official prices will be out then. But considering the increase in equipment as against the current Innova – we do expect a minor bump.
