Cars in India to become costly from April 1st

Major car makers including Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra and General Motors are planning to increase price of their cars in India as the new emission norm, BS-IV is going to be implemented from 1st of April. The car makers are saying that due to this new emission norm the companies have to upgrade their cars which in turn will force them to increase the price of their vehicles.

As per the recommendations of Mashelkar Committee, 13 big cities of the country will be upgraded to new emission norms, BS-IV, while norms in rest of the country will be upgraded to BS-III from existing BS-II.

Mr P Balendran, General Motors' Vice-President (Corporate Communications), said that except Chevrolet Beat and Spark, the whole product portfolio will be going through a price increase, starting from April. On the other hand Hyundai India has already announced that it is going to increase the price of its cars in India by up to Rs 5000.

Besides this homegrown car makers like Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra have already decided to increase the price of its cars in India by next month. On the other hand carmakers including Mercedes-Benz and Toyota and are also expected to increase the price of their cars, as they have said that the price increase will be considered only after the implementation of the new emission norms.
