Highlights

Toyota showcased its C-segment offering, the Yaris sedan, at the Auto Expo 2018 (Read more about the unveil here). The Yaris will be offered in two variants - V and VX - and will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed CVT gearbox. On the features front, the Toyota Yaris packs up to seven airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors, vehicle stability control and hill-start assist, ABS (anti-lock brakes) with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) and brake assist, four disc brakes and ISOFIX child seat anchors, among others.

From the front, the Yaris looks a bit too busy with a lot of elements coming together. However, the rear profile is more mature with wraparound tail lamps having LED inserts and an integrated lip spoiler. Step inside and the cabin not only looks premium but feels the same too. Though not the most spacious of the lot, the segment-first roof-mounted rear AC vents and a snappy 7-inch infotainment system sitting on top of the central console, give its cabin a unique appearance.

The Yaris will take on sedans like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz once it’s launched in April, 2018 at an expected price of around Rs 10 lakh.

One of the cars that caught my attention at this year’s Auto Expo was Toyota Yaris. It seems the Japanese automaker has upped the ante against the experienced players such as Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in the mid-sized sedan segment. The company is expecting this car to be a volume generator. At first look, with sleek grille and high mounted halogen projector lamps, one can easily get confused between Corolla Altis and Yaris and this would prove to be a major USP of the car... 8

Toyota Yaris review

Things We Like in Yaris

  • Safety - The Yaris will be the first car in its segment to get 7 airbags as standard
  • First-in-segment features - 6-way powered driver seat, front parking sensors
  • Toyota’s QDR - The Yaris will be reliable. It’s a Toyota. Period.

Things We Don't Like in Yaris

  • Missing features - Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, sunroof
  • No diesel engine - The Yaris will be launched in India with a petrol engine only
  • Space: Adequate kneeroom at the back but overall cabin doesn't feel big

Stand Out Features

  • Premium interiors: Dual-tone dash, leather-wrapped steering, etc, lend a premium feel to the cabin

  • Motorised roof-mounted rear AC vents - you may have never seen such air con vents before in any sedan in India!

CarDekho Verdict

The Toyota Yaris is expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh onwards. At this price point, some might see it as a more expensive option when compared to the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Hyundai Verna. However, one should not forget the amount of standard safety features it offers.

"What’s more is that you can expect the Yaris to feature the same build quality as the Corolla and the Innova Crysta."

Being a Toyota, expect it to be reliable and affordable to maintain as well.
