Kia Carens Clavis Long Term Fleet Introduction: An Impressive Start

With over 1500 kms already done, the Clavis has not disappointed us once, but there is a lot of travel coming its way

The Kia Carens has been a favorite of the CarDekho office since before I even joined this industry. So when I heard that the Carens Clavis is coming to us as a long term vehicle, I knew I had to put my hands on it. In just a few weeks, we have managed to put high digits on the odometer, and these are our first impressions.

Definitely A Looker

The pre-facelift Carens, which is still on sale in a limited capacity, had a somewhat boring design language, which is what we expect from an MPV. The Clavis, on the other hand, goes into another direction.

It does not take the SUV-design route which we’ve seen a few MPVs do, instead, it takes that subtle MPV look and makes it look more premium. Simple curves on the face, flat profiles, and sleek lighting elements.

This design does look good, and while it does not warrant too much attention, this modern look definitely turns heads.

Just The Right Space 

In the last two weeks, the Carens Clavis has been to both Nagpur and Mumbai, on different occasions, and with different people. During its time in Mumbai, it comfortably seated my entire family and my cousins. Me, my parents, my aunt and uncle, and two cousins, all of them fit perfectly.

The last row is not really adequate for a tall passenger, but for your short siblings/cousins, that is the perfect place. During hour long commutes in Mumbai’s famous traffic, each passenger had enough space to sit in a relaxed manner, and during the few airport runs I had to do, I had no problem fitting their luggage in the boot (provided the last row was folded down).

Cares For The Wallet

We have the diesel manual variant of the Clavis and here are some figures. An indicated fuel efficiency of 18 kmpl + on highways, 13 kmpl in the city, and around 11 kmpl in peak hours. I’ve done around 500 kms in just the last 5 days, and I’ve used around Rs 3000 worth of diesel, which seems decent.

The only issue? Driving a manual in traffic. See, this manual is good, the clutch is not that hard, and gears slot in place smoothly. But Kia has not given an option of a diesel automatic in the top-spec diesel variant. You only get one diesel automatic, and it's in the mid-spec variant. So if you are planning to buy this, make sure you are willing to compromise on the convenience of an automatic. If you decide to go for the diesel automatic, which is the mid-spec HTK+ variant, you will miss out on features like a sunroof, 12.3-inch screens, 360-degree camera, and an air purifier, which the top-spec HTX diesel gets.

The engine is also pretty responsive, there is enough grunt for quick overtakes both in the city and on the highway, and it does not make a lot of noise.

So far, the experience has been pretty good, and I get why everyone at the office likes the Carens so much. We will drive the Clavis more and have already planned a few trips. In a few weeks, this variant of the Clavis will be replaced with a turbo-petrol one, so we’ll also be able to give you a comparison of how different both powertrains are.
