SC Orders Taxis to Run on CNG

Supreme Court of India came down heavily on pollution in Delhi today morning and gave major judgements. The apex court declared that the taxis running in NCR region should mandatorily run on CNG by March 31, 2016. Apart from this, the court has put a ban on diesel cars which have an engine capacity of 2000cc and above.

Both the judgements come at a time when a lot of activities have taken place in order to curb pollution in Delhi. Delhi government recently came up with an “innovative” idea of odd-even policy for banning cars which has already created ripples in the automobile industry. According to the Delhi government, cars with odd registration number can surf roads on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while those with even numbers can do it on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The car-ban will be valid from 8 AM to 8 PM and Sundays will be exempted from the rule. The decision was announced as a reaction to Delhi High Court comments which compared living in the National territory to living in a “gas chamber”. The odd-even ban is to be implemented from January 01, 2016 and the AAP government has even started bolstering the public transportation system.

Apart from this, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Delhi put a stop on the registration of diesel cars till January 6, 2016 few days back. NGT at times has even recommended that diesel cars older than 10 years should be completely banned here observing the worsening quality of air. Although, it is yet to be implied with.
