If you are somebody who is planning to scrap their old chariot for a jazzy new performance car, bad news awaits you. The incentives offered by the Government for replacing your old car come with terms and conditions attached to them. A senior transport official associated with this matter said that, people opting for fuel-guzzlers (cars which do not have a good mileage) are likely to be kept out from the Voluntary Vehicular Fleet Modernisation Policy. To put a number to it, cars that have a claimed mileage of less than 14kmpl as certified by the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) will not make the cut.

"Details of the plan are yet to be worked out. However, one thing is certain that the incentives won't be offered on fuel-guzzling cars. Otherwise, the motive of this policy would be defeated," an official from the Transport Ministry said.

Under the said policy, vehicles which were purchased prior to April 2005 or the ones that do not match the BS IV emission norms are eligible for incentives. In order to curb pollution, the Government is planning to have nearly 28 million polluting vehicles off the road. We are yet to receive an official stamp on this measure and the final decision will only be made once all the stakeholders have given a go ahead.
