Hyundai has unveiled the fourth-generation i20 globally, which will be one of the biggest updates for the premium hatchback in recent years. The 2027 Hyundai i20 will come with a completely redesigned exterior, a futuristic and quirky cabin, and more features while retaining familiar powertrain options. 

The new-generation 2027 i20 has made its global debut in Brazil, and Hyundai is expected to introduce it in India in the future. With a stronger design language and a much more premium cabin experience, the upcoming i20 will continue to be a top contender in the premium hatchback segment.

The 2027 Hyundai i20 gets a major design overhaul, moving away from the sharper styling of the current model and adopting a more premium and sophisticated design language.

The fascia of the hatchback gets a completely redesigned look with connected LED headlamps that give it a wider appearance. The bumper features a large lower air dam, while the lower section gets black detailing with a silver strip running across the grille area for a sporty contrast.

Unlike the current i20’s sharper cuts and aggressive styling, the new model adopts smoother surfacing with softer character lines, creating a cleaner and more premium look. However, the LED signature looks sharper and more prominent. 

In profile, the new i20 gets a more upright and boxier profile, giving it a stronger road presence. Thick cladding around the wheel arches and side skirts adds a crossover-inspired touch, while the unique window line that rises sharply towards the rear gives it a distinctive appearance.

For the Brazil-spec model, Hyundai offers up to 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. The new i20 appears to be larger in size with its crossover-like styling and sharp looks. 

From the rear, the biggest update is the newly designed connected LED tail lamp setup. The redesigned tailgate features sculpted detailing, while the roof spoiler and chunky rear bumper with a faux diffuser element add a sportier character. It also comes with a shark fin antenna, which gives it a premium look. 

Overall, the new i20 gets a more premium and futuristic design while retaining the practicality expected from a premium hatchback.

Colour Options

The global-spec Hyundai i20 is available in eight colour options:

• Atlas White
• Onyx Black
• Brisk Silver
• Sand Silver
• Sapphire Blue
• Shadow Gray
• Silk Gray
• Lumina Gray

The India-spec model is expected to receive a similar colour palette, adding a few new shades over the current model of the i20.

The interior of the 2027 Hyundai i20 has been significantly upgraded, offering a more modern and technology-focused layout. Hyundai has also changed the dashboard design and layout. 

The biggest highlight is the curved dual-screen setup, combining the digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system into a single integrated display unit. This gives the cabin a more premium feel, similar to Hyundai’s larger and newer global models.

The dashboard design is neater, with sleek vertical AC vents placed in the centre. The climate control panel is vertically positioned between the vents, giving it a quirky appearance.The new i20 also gets Hyundai’s latest flat-bottom steering wheel with the Morse-code-inspired logo, similar to models such as the Hyundai Verna and Venue.

Multiple interior themes are offered globally, including beige-grey, all-black and black-grey combinations. The India-spec version is expected to feature a premium cabin layout with updated materials and increased equipment. 

In terms of practicality, the 2027 i20 will come with multiple storage spaces and charging ports. Even the seats appear to be well-cushioned and one can expect the cabin to be a comfortable place. 

Boot Space

Hyundai has not revealed the boot capacity of the new-generation i20 yet. However, considering the larger proportions and practical hatchback layout, the upcoming model is expected to continue offering usable luggage space suitable for daily commuting and weekend trips.

The current i20 offers around 311 litres of boot space, and the new model could see improvements in this department.

The new-generation Hyundai i20 is expected to receive a major feature upgrade over the current model. One can expect the India-spec version to get features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car technology, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, automatic climate control, wireless phone charger, a sunroof, keyless entry with push-button start/stop and paddle shifters with the automatic transmission. 

All the features mentioned above will help the i20 remain one of the most feature-rich hatchbacks in the segment. 

The new Hyundai i20 gets a significantly improved safety package compared to the current model.

The global-spec model comes equipped with amenities such as Level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), six airbags as standard, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Hold Assist (HHA), a reverse parking camera with rear parking sensors, an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, all-wheel disc brakes and a rear wiper and washer.

We expect the India-spec version to get most of the features mentioned above. The India-spec iteration could also come with a 360-degree camera system. 

Performance

The global-spec Hyundai i20 is offered with a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated flex-fuel petrol engine and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

For India, Hyundai is expected to continue with the existing 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine for the sportier i20 N-Line.

MT- Manual Transmission, CVT- Continuously Variable Transmission (automatic) DCT- Dual Clutch Transmission (automatic)

The naturally aspirated petrol engine will continue to focus on smooth city driving and efficiency, while the turbo-petrol engine will appeal to buyers looking for stronger performance and a more engaging driving experience. That said, the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine is likely to be reserved to the sportier N Line variant like the current car.

The 2027 Hyundai i20 brings a major transformation to the premium hatchback segment with a completely redesigned exterior, a futuristic cabin and a much more tech-focused package. While it retains the practicality and everyday usability that made the i20 popular, the new-generation model adds premium touches that make the cabin feel more welcoming and sophisticated than before. With its improved safety features and continuation of Hyundai’s reliable petrol powertrains, the new i20 could remain one of the most complete premium hatchbacks in India.

The new-generation Hyundai i20 is expected to launch in India by mid-2027. The premium hatchback is expected to start at around Rs 6.5 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will continue to rival models like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza.
