Datsun is a car maker that is renowned across Japan and many other markets of Southeast Asia. Its presence in India, however, is slackened in comparison to other, more dominating brands in our market. Nevertheless, Datsun is a truly remarkable car maker, combining quality with low price and economics. Its origins lay in Japan, and it is now a subsidiary of the Japanese giant Nissan. It has been in play for almost a century now, refining its engineering for the best over a massive span of time. Another magnificent piece meant to hit Indian roads soon, is the Datsun on DO . It is a masterpiece in its segment, a four doored sedan that is crafted for a sophisticated display in its make. This sedan is built with the aim of pampering its passengers with all whims possible. It is expected to come in a few variants, but the engine trim is the same, a 1.6-litre power plant aided with a 5-speed manual transmission. Currently, this vehicle is available for sale in Russian automobile market in several trim levels. In India too, it is expected to be come in several trim levels for the buyers to choose from. However, the automaker may offer this vehicle with petrol engine option only, since the Russia-bound version is also available with only petrol mill. Like several other Datsun models in the country, we can expect that this upcoming sedan to be in a very affordable price range. In a country like India, Government imposes minimal amount of tax on sub 4-meter vehicles, as compared to other, which measures more than 4 meters. It will be interesting to see how the automaker will price this vehicle in an affordable range, since it measures more than 4.3 meters.
This yet to be launched sedan is most likely to get a price tag of just under 5.0 lakh, which will send a strong signal to other automakers and push them towards making affordable sedans for the buyers. Soon after its launch, it is going to take on the likes of Chevrolet Sail, Ford Classic, Mahindra Verito and Fiat Linea Classic in the Indian automobile market. This soon to be launched sedan is expected to come with only one engine option and it is going to be a 1.6-litre petrol mill. This engine comprises of four cylinders and 8-valves, which displaces 1596cc. This is an SOHC based engine, which is capable of producing a maximum power of 87bhp along with a pounding torque of 140Nm, which is somewhat good for Indian roads. In the Russian markets, its base gets a slightly less powerful engine, which is capable of producing 82bhp of peak power and 132Nm of maximum torque. This engine is incorporated with a multi-point fuel injection technology, which is helpful for improving its fuel efficiency. After its arrival in India, it could generate a minimum mileage of approximately 12 Kmpl on city roads, which could go up to a maximum of 19 Kmpl on highways. According to the details provided in the company's official Russian portal, its base variant is capable of achieving a top speed of about 165 Kmph and can reach a 100 Kmph mark in about 12.9 seconds. However, its mid range and top end trims are said to be capable of reaching a top speed of 173 Kmph and can accelerate from 0 to 100 Kmph speed mark in about 12.2 seconds. Like mentioned above, its transmission duties are handled by the five speed manual gearbox and there won’t by an automatic gearbox option.
By looking at the images of this Datsun on DO, we can say that the vehicle looks quite decent from every corner and it is certainly going to lure the buyers with its appearance. Although it inherits the new design philosophy of the company, it looks quite different from other Datsun models, owing to its aggressively sculptured headlight cluster. It is quite large and is expected to be powered by halogen headlamps. The front bumper has a sporty design with edgier lip that renders a dynamic stance to its frontage. It houses a sleek air intake section along with a pair of air ducts. The signature aspect of its frontage is its stylish radiator grille with perforated mesh and thick metallic surround. Adding to its elegance is the expressive lines given on the bonnet that renders a masculine appeal to the frontage. The side profile looks even decent, as its gets neatly sculptured fenders and panels. However, it has a plain design without any lines, which makes it look somewhat like an outdated vehicle. In Russian markets, its base and mid range variants are available with steel rims, while its top end trims are blessed with alloy wheels. However, in India, this model series may not get alloy wheels considering the fact that it is going to be in the entry level segment. Its door handles along with ORVM caps are supposed to get body color, while the B pillars are slated to get black garnish. Coming to its rear end, it gets a curved tailgate, which makes it look distinct from several other entry level sedans. Surrounding this is the stylish taillight cluster that houses brake lights along with turn indicators. It also has a body colored bumper, which is as expressive as its front one.
Unlike several other sedans, this vehicle gets chrome plated strip on the lower section of its tailgate, which complements its elegance. This vehicle has a total length measuring at 4337mm and an overall height standing at 1500mm. It has a total width of 1700mm and a minimum ground clearance of 174mm. However, it has a wheelbase of just 2476mm, which is not as good as other contenders. Coming to the interior design, it looks even better than its exteriors owing to the flawless design. At the same time, the manufacturer has also made use of good quality material inside the cabin that further adds to its elegances. Like several other conventional sedans, it gets a dual tone color scheme and is further highlighted by metallic accents. The seats seem to be wide and have adjustable head restraints. The international version gets heated seats in the front cabin, but for India, this feature may not make it to the final list. Unlike several other Datsun models, this vehicle has a beautiful steering wheel with company’s logo embedded on it. However, there are no multi-functional switches on it. In terms of comfort aspects, the company may offer several exciting comfort and functional features like many of Datsun models. Customers can expect for comfort aspects like rear parking sensors, rain sensors, and an on-board computer that provides essential information related to the vehicle. Beside these, there will be standard comfort aspects like power assisted steering, electrical windows, height adjustable driver’s seat, split folding rear seat, cup holders, storage pockets and cabin lights. Not to forget that the vehicle is also expected to get a proficient 2-DIN music system featuring CD player along with Radio and various other connectivity functions that makes the journey fascinating. On the other hand, its top end version may also get an infotainment system with 7-inch screen for supporting navigation and video playback. These features will certainly make this vehicle as the most competitive in the segment, but one needs to wait until the arrival of this sedan. In terms of cabin space, this vehicle is spacious, despite of its shorter wheelbase and it can accommodate at least five passengers. Interesting fact is that this Datsun on DO has a massive boot volume of 530 litres, which is further accompanied by a fuel tank that has 50 litres storage capacity. In terms of braking, we can expect this vehicle to come with disc and drum braking mechanism like any other entry level sedan. Depending upon the variants, the automaker will also offer an anti lock braking system along with an electronic brake force distribution for enhancing this mechanism. As for the suspension is concerned, we can expect its front axle to be fitted with a McPherson strut and the rear one could get a torsion bean suspension system. Both the axles may also get coil springs for improving its ability to absorb shocks and jerks caused on roads.
Safety and security is the most important aspect of any sedan model in the automobile segment and company knows this fact better. In this front, it may not compromise in terms of crucial aspects like airbags, three point seat belts and impact protection bars. Buyers can expect that unlike other Datsun models, this sedan will come with a reinforced body structure with crumple zones, which enables it to deal with collision impact. Beside these, customers can also expect for several essential protective aspects like central locking system, heated windscreen, front fog lights, driver’s seat belt warning light, rain sensors, and ISOFIX child protection mountings. However, all these features and functions are expected to be incorporated in the India-bound version, as several other companies are already in a stiff fight and offering its customers with attractive deals. There is no official information from the company about its official launch date, but the launch may not happen until the end of this year.
