February 03, 2016: Chevrolet India has showcased its MPV Spin at the Auto Expo 2016. The car is expected to make it to the Indian automotive scene by 2017. The car is speculated to be priced in the bracket of INR 8 to 12 lacs and will compete against the likes of Renault Lodgey, Honda Mobilio, Maruti Ertiga, Chevrolet Enjoy and Toyota Innova to some extent.

Chevrolet Spin is a compact SUV designed for the emerging markets in Asia and South America. Based on the Chevy's Cobalt sedan, this upcoming SUV has been designed and developed by the GM Brazil. Soon after its launch in India, it could give tough times for the likes of best-selling Maruti Ertiga. Chevrolet already has an MPV in the segment, but it is mostly operating as a taxi. This Spin would be positioned as a premium MPV and it would be targeted towards individuals and families. The American carmaker is apparently planning to bring this vehicle to India in the early 2017, which is still a long way to go.

As of now, details related to the India-bound version are yet to be disclosed. We expect that the car to come with a touchscreen infotainment system along with all the standard equipments and facilities on board.
Background and Evolution:
Designed and developed by the company's Brazilian arm, this Chevy Spin went into production in the year 2012 and is currently available in the markets of Brazil and Indonesia. GM has planned to launch the vehicle in India in the first half of 2017.
This contemporary MPV model from Chevy looks more like an affordable family car rather than a premium luxury vehicle. It was officially showcased at the Indian Auto Expo 2012 with same nomenclature used for other company's products. We do expect the vehicle to come in numerous trim levels, but can't confirm about the total number of variants. As for the engine options, its diesel versions are most likely to be powered by a 1.3-litre unit as it is in Indonesia. While the petrol variants should get a 1.4-litre motor, which currently powers 'Enjoy' MPV. It has a dated exterior design with extra curves and crease likes on its body. But its cabin is a big let-down, thanks to the cheap quality plastic and obsolete design. Soon after its arrival, it would face the likes of Maruti Ertiga and Renault Lodgy in India.
Like mentioned above, its exteriors has neutral design that will neither impress you, nor it will annoy you. It looks like a pure family MPV with all necessary lightings and contemporary cosmetics. It has a signature dual-port radiator grille with golden bowtie, roof rails, body colored outside mirrors and everything to make it look decent. However, it could fail to impress the younger audiences. Front facade or design of any car can influence the onlookers impression to a greater extent and this Spin from Chevy has enough curves to grab the attention.
This MPV has a typical design language of the brand and its front facade expresses it quite well. Its dual-port front grille with thick chrome surround exudes bold nature of the vehicle. The golden bowtie in the center adds to the grace.
Its headlight cluster has a signature hawk-wing shaped design and nothing ground breaking about it. It features conventional lighting units along with turn indicators as well.
Its body colored bumper looks fat and has layers upon it. It houses a pair of round shaped fog lamps for additional safety.
The side profile of the car looks rather decent and much trendier than its closest rivals. You can see a lot of curves and creases that flows across the fenders giving it a masculine appeal.
The car, which was displayed at the auto show wore a set of alloy wheels for its fenders. We expect that the base variants will come with standard steel rims as standard.
There is any chrome used for its side profile. However, silver garnished roof rails and black B pillars makes for a trendier look.
The rear section of the car has a wider stance unlike other MPVs. The taillight cluster has a wrap-around design and they are placed on either sides of the boot-lid. The rear bumper is smaller and it comes with housing for the license plate.
The Interior design of the car is a disappointment. The quality of plastic looks awful and the design itself is out-of-date. We need to consider the fact that the automobile industry is growing and so does the competition. Chevrolet really needs to work on its interior designing to make it look much trendier than its rivals. This upcoming Spin from Chevy is a seven seater MPV, but there is hardly enough space for seven adults.
Step inside the cabin, you'll notice the dual-tone dashboard, whose fit and finish seems decent. Unfortunately, the quality of plastic and the color combination is dull. The steering wheel on the other has a conventional three spoke design with multi-functional switches mounted on it. It gets covered with a leatherette material.
The center fascia seems to have no infotainment system rather it gets a conventional audio system with column stalked switches. Also, the AC unit seems to be manually operated system.
The front seats are rather comfortable and offer a much more relaxed feel while traveling. They also have adjustable head restraints.
The second row has bench seat featuring 60:40 split folding facility. Unfortunately, there are only two head restraints. While the third row also has bench seat that can accommodate two children rather than two adults.
The instrument cluster looks simple and yet it does the job well in keep the driver informed all the time. It has all the necessary warning lights and functions providing vital stats of the car. There is a digital speedometer, digital fuel gauge, digital trip meter, rpm meter and several other warning lights.
There are a few storage options available inside including drink holders, glove box and other that adds to the convenience quotient. Driver's side door panel gets power window switches with auto up/down facility.
Overall, we felt that the cabin is a big letdown for Spin, especially for the most competitive markets like India. By the time of its launch, GM really needs to focus in improving its interior design.
As of now, this vehicle is expected with one petrol and diesel engine option. It could use the same power plants, which are currently performing for the Chevrolet Enjoy.
This India-bound version, unlike Brazil or Indonesia, is most likely to get a 1.4-litre SMARTECH power plant. It is a four cylinder mill with a total displacement capacity of 1399cc. It is a powerful engine that can pump out a maximum of 98.79bhp in combination with a commanding torque of 131Nm at 4400rpm. Its transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox. This engine in Enjoy can push the vehicle upto a top speed of 155 kmph. In the meantime, it can break the 100 kmph mark in just 14 seconds. In Spin, expect the drive type to be in a rear wheel drive format. It is rumored that the manufacturer might also introduce the automatic version of Spin, which could be a big boost for the car.
Reports suggest that the diesel version of Spin would be powered by a 1.3-litre TCDI engine, which is also a 4-cylindered mill. This one has a displacement capacity of 1248cc and runs on the DOHC valve configuration. This Fiat-sourced motor has the ability to produce a maximum power of 73.74bhp at 4000rpm along with a torque of 172.5Nm at 1750rpm. This one's transmission duties will be given to a conventional 5-speed manual gearbox.
For now, everything about the car is a mystery and the company hasn't disclosed anything relating to the features or variants. We expect that the MPV will be launched in more than 3 trim levels and all of them should be offered with at least driver airbag as standard and passenger airbag as optional. ABS with EBD is expected to come as a standard feature in the top end variants. Some of the other safety features are expected to be 3-point seatbelts, side impact protection beams, crumple zones, engine immobilizer, central locking system and few other such features.
There is no doubt in our minds that the car would be made available in a range of at least three trim levels. We can expect that the base variants would come with standard features like power assisted steering, front power windows, drink holders, internally adjustable outside mirrors, foldable seats and a manually adjustable air conditioning unit. While the mid range trims could get additional features like rear AC vents, remote central locking, digital clock, rear power windows and so on. Also, we can expect for a 2-DIN music system with basic connectivity features like USB and AUX-In. While the top end version should have a Bluetooth handsfree connectivity, rear parking sensors, electrically adjustable outside mirrors and alloy wheels. Also, it is believed that the company may offer its top end version with a touchscreen infotainment system as standard.
Looking at the picture of the car, we feel that it would be placed in the entry level segment, rather than in the league of premium vehicles. Its interior design looks pretty much out-of-date and the quality looks cheap. If you doesn't want to spend too much of budget then going for the base variants would be a wise option. However, it is too early to say about the variants or its features, since its launch is planned in the early 2017. Till then, you may find a perfect alternative to the Chevy Spin.
