27 April, 2012: Audi A2 concept is purely an electric car unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011. The elegant lines that flow from headlamps to the sides are the eye-candy of this concept. Tagged to be a premium metropolitan vehicle, Audi A2 boasts of ample of space. The Indian Audi range starts from A4 sedan. There is no hatchback car by Audi till date in India. Seeing this concept, one can expect that Audi might roll out A2 hatchback. However, it remains to be seen what shape does Audi renders to this concept car. There is no information about when is the Audi A2 launch happening.

Audi A2 is a 100% electric concept car with the steering and brakes purely operated by wires. Originally, Audi A2 was a small MPV whose tenure was limited from 1999 to 2005 that. The erstwhile MPV was manufactured entirely out of aluminum. In this car, the superstructure is made majorly of aluminum components and is complemented by add-on parts of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). It possesses all road manners and is quite space efficient. The concept was first showcased at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Although Audi A2 is a five-door hatchback, it's smaller in size than the three-door A1 (not present in India) measuring just 3.80 meters long, 1.69 meters wide and 1.49 meters tall. A2 will fly in the air once its production version is ready and it will owe such tremendous performance to the ultra-lightweight construction. The concept car weighs only 1150 kg. The perfect opaque glass roof finished in flat electric adds four moons to the look of Audi’s concept car. The roof turns transparent with the push of a button. This is an example of sheer technology used in the small car. A mechanism of efficient temperature management runs behind this concept. When the glass roof is opaque, it blocks the infrared rays of sun. However, when an electric voltage is applied, minute particles embedded in the glass align themselves thus allowing light to pass without any hindrance.
There is a single frame grille which acts as an air inlet in the front above which lies the Audi rings; the engine hood is permanently bolted to the body. Below the grille are the efficacious cooling elements constructed of graphite foam, which is supposed to be an excellent conductor of heat from water to the ambient air. The Audi rings are flanked by matrix beam LED headlights. A long bundle of small light-emitting diodes are arranged one above the other which produce low beam and high beam light. The LED lights work independently and each can be switched on and off so as to illuminate the road in any circumstance. The daytime running light in the lower section of headlight cluster is made of numerous mini-LEDs.
Exteriors are also marked by 18 inch wheels, sharply carved wheel arches, a low greenhouse in side. Sharp lines run all over the metallic surface. A sloping roof ends into a rear spoiler that is longer than conventional. The tornado line running below the window guards the underlying Audi dynamic ray of light stretching right from headlights to tail lights. This dynamic light produced by Light-emitting diodes and light guides is black in color when Audi A2 is standing still and turns orange when moving; however, it glows into blue as the owner approaches and focuses on the door handle which actually is embedded into this band. As the driver swiped his hand over them, the door handle extends out. The Audi dynamic light also acts as the turn signal as it pulses on the side where the car is turning. This is not it. A red pulse of light runs along the flank when brakes are applied.
On the back, the brightness of matrix beam taillights is adjusted automatically according to the brightness on road. Five laser diodes producethe rear fog light. When clarity is good, their light is hidden. In the fog or rain, however, it bangs the water particles in the air and becomes clearly observable as a floating triangle.
Inside the cabin the dashboard is divided into two sections. Audi dynamic lights make the presence felt inside the car also. They run from the doors to the cockpit along the edges. The stylish steering wheel is flattened and just one spokes hold it. The touch sensitive surface of the steering can be used to control key functions. If both the touchpads are touched at the same time, the A2 concept enters into a semi-autonomous driving mode which gives an ease of driving in slow-moving traffic. Near the steering column is a 7 inch display flanked by two other displays with speedometer and power meter. Electric drive starts with just a push of a button. An animated band of light encircles the driver and passenger, and two touchpads fold up to the right of the steering wheel as soon as the driver pushes the button. Shifting gears happen only by wire technology. The retractable console between the front two seats has an extra touchpad for typing letters and numbers. Audi connect technology encircles Audi A2 concept.
Audi A2 runs on a lithium-ion battery in the sandwich floor stores that lays energy of a total of 31 kWh, 24 kWh of which is usable. It churns out 116 bhp of power and 270 Nm of torque to the front wheels via single speed transmission. However, what production version will witness is still in the wraps. It takes roughly 1.5 hours to fully recharge the battery. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds; top speed is limited to 150 km/h. A McPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam axle at the rear renders great handling like a normal fuel car.
