Hatchback crossovers, it might be a new concept for us but for the West this segment is highly popular. The contradictory fact is that, outside India its not just the Cross badging that do all the business, they actually offer four wheel drive, raised suspension and slight off-road capabilities. Recently, Toyota zoomed in the Etios Cross and the company has started taking booking of the same. The official deliveries of the car will start from May 7. Contrarily, Volkswagen also offers Polo Cross, launched last year. Lets see what these crossovers offer – a quick comparo.

Toyota Etios Cross

Exterior:

Both cars are heavily cladded with all around plastic cladding, Toyota offers more 'oomph' in the Etios Cross compared to the Cross Polo. The Etios Cross offers newer headlamp cluster compared to the stock Etios Liva; the indicators are shifted to the bumper in the fog lamp housing. The Etios cross gets newer grille, tweaked bumper with silver faux bull bar and bash guard. The side profile get heavy plastic cladding with 'Etios Cross' embedded. The rear bumper is complete black with silver faux protector. The boot-lid has Etios Cross badged plastic appliqué. The vehicle also gets roof-rails and big roof mounted spoiler.

Cross Polo, on the other hand offers all-around plastic cladding with Cross Polo embedded on the side profile and silver roof rails. Like the Etios Cross Polo iteration doesn't boost high modification to head lamp unit or the bumpers. Although, the Cross Polo features restyled front bumper with new fog lamp housing and silver bash guard. Cross Polo comes in three colors Flash Red, Reflex silver and Deep black; while Toyota Etios will features more shade option

Volkswagen Cross Polo

Interior:

Expect the exterior showdown, these compact crossovers offer little on interiors to distinguish them from there stock siblings. Etios offers new shiny piano black finish on inside and all the iteration the company did with Etios range recently. The car offers integrated audio unit with USB, AUX-in and Bluetooth connectivity. The car features ABS and EBD with dual front airbags. The Cross Polo features stock Polo Highline features like the double-din music system with Bluetooth phone connectivity and a special Livon Titanium black upholstery. The interior of the VW is far better than the Toyota in the overall look and appeal and features richer materials.

Toyota Etios Cross

Engine:

The Cross houses 1.2-litre petrol engine and 1.4-litre diesel motor from the stock Etios Liva, while for the enthusiast, an option of more powerful 1.5-litre petrol is also available. The 1.2-litre gasoline churns a maximum power output of 78bhp while the big brother 1.5-litre belts an output of 88bhp. Moreover, the diesel engine develops power in figures of 66bhp. The Volkswagen Cross Polo carries a 3-cylinder 1.2-litre diesel engine that develops a power of 73bhp and peak torque of 180 Nm. The powerplant is coupled to five-speed manual transmission.

Crossovers are slowly gaining popularity in the country, but unfortunately the car that debuted the segment Skoda Fabia Scout is discontinued due to slow sales, but like the premium hatchback, compact SUV and sub-4m sedans, manufacturers are also entering into crossovers. Fiat will also launch Punto based crossover Avventura later this year. Avventura would offer uprated suspension, tail mounted spare tyre and bigger wheels.
