The specially wrapped Thars were used for a “Reverse Gear” challenge performed by the team’s players, including the captain Sanju Samson

For the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mahindra had signed on as the official SUV partner for four teams, one of which was the Rajasthan Royals. As part of the collaboration, a couple of Mahindra Thars were wrapped in pink and blue to match the jersey of the team, before being used in the “Reverse Gear” challenge.

How does it look?

The Thar is wrapped predominantly in pink with blue stripes on the bonnet and sides and the roof was also wrapped in blue. The logo of the Rajasthan Royals was prominently applied to the bonnet with additional lettering decals on the sides reading “Halla Bol” (the team slogan), and the team’s name. Even the cladding around the bottom edges has been wrapped in pink! Additionally, these Thars also had a roof carrier on the top.

While the colours may be a subjective choice, it did seem like the wrap was either not done well or starting to come off somewhat as we could see many untidy bits around busy parts of the bodywork.

What was the challenge?

As the name suggests, the challenge was to drive the Thar in reverse, but through an obstacle course passing through cones and flags. There was a penalty of 10 seconds if the vehicle touched any of the obstacles. Four Rajasthan Royals team members were divided in a team of two, each team having one driver and one co-driver.

Rajasthan Royals’ captain and batsman, Sanju Samson, performed this challenge, along with Riyan, Romi and KC.

Mahindra Thar diesel engine

Mahindra Thar comes with three engine options, the 2-litre turbo petrol (making 150PS and 320Nm) and the 2.2-litre diesel, which (making 130PS and 300Nm) come with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. There’s also an option of a 1.5-litre diesel engine (making 118PS and 300Nm) mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox but only with the RWD Thar. The 4WD drivetrain is standard on 2.2-litre diesel and optional on 2-litre turbo petrol.

Based on the details in the video, it seemed like the IPL players were driving a diesel-manual variant with the hard top. The Thar is also available with a convertible soft top option, depending on the variant and powertrain combination.

One of Mahindra’s other IPL collaborators, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, had a few units of the XUV400 electric SUV in a team livery for some player challenges as well.

So, what did you make of the Mahindra Thar in this pink shade? Which IPL team’s livery would best be suited for the Thar in your opinion? Tell us in the comments section below.
