Mahindra offers the Thar in six colours, but if they don’t seem interesting enough, check out the wraps on these Thars

Mahindra has done a swell job with the new second-generation Thar, but it has been conservative with the factory-painted colour options. However, we believe the carmaker could introduce new colours to expand the Thar’s appeal. A handful of owners have spent some extra cash to get their cars wrapped in bright vinyls of different colours. One such car is this electric blue Thar below that looks straight out of an ‘80s American beach:

A simple vinyl wrap really changes the look of a car, doesn’t it? While this paint job looks like Mahindra could have it on its palette, most people who get vinyl wraps on their car are looking for something unique, perhaps even zany. Such as this one from Punjab:

Doesn’t this ‘matte chrome purple’ shade look stunning? It shines different hues in varying lighting conditions, and that’s something you surely can’t get from the factory paint options. Vinyl wrapping allows you to choose from a much wider palette of colours and multiple textures, such as this shiny candy pink shade:

The above Thar owners have maintained some of the original aesthetic of the car by keeping the bumpers and plastic cladding black (although a little tweaked), but you can also get these plastic bits wrapped. Have a look at the short video below:

Now this is one classy Mahindra Thar! The white bumpers, side cladding and hardtop pair nicely with the upsized wheel rims. But not all Thar wrap-jobs look this good:

This Thar owner hasn’t just got the plastic bumper wrapped in white, even the grille and headlamp housings are remoulded. We aren’t sure that this all-white soft-top Thar looks good with its botched plastic surgery, but to each their own, right? Let us know in the comments what shade you’d like to see on the new Thar.

Peelable paint is an alternative to vinyl wraps that looks like actual automotive paint. Check out this tan Mahindra Thar and its vintage desert jeep aesthetic. The peelable paint seems indistinguishable from real paint, right? The unmodified soft top adds to the overall appeal, and we hope that sometime in the future, Mahindra offers this colour as a paint option from the factory. You can get peelable paint in any colour, so let us know in the comments what shade you’d like to see on the new Thar.

Here’s how vinyl wrapping works: these vinyl sheets are made in custom colours, and each sheet is lined with adhesive. They are carefully placed on the exterior panels of your car, cut and aligned with the edges of each panel. Once it dries off, the plastic film can stay in place for a few years without fading off. A good vinyl film will not harm the paint of your car, instead, it will protect it from minor scratches and stone chips. The original paint stays intact under the surface at sites such as the underside of the bonnet and interior edges of the doors around the door cards. Hence, you don’t have to update the new colour of the car on the registration certificate. However, vinyl wraps are a grey area under the eyes of the law, and the authorities may demand you to pull the expensive film off your car.
