I first saw the car when I visited Concorde Motors to actually see the Tata safari. Unfortunately, Safari registrations were on hold due to Supreme court restrictions in Delhi. I got infatuated with the design and the talk of potential customers in the showroom.
However almost after a month I went back along with my wife to choose our second car between KWID, Redigo and Tiago. Tiago Diesel top end sunburst colour was our unanimous choice. We did not even bother to check the Kwid/redigo. Although I had few butterflies in my stomach wondering how a Tata car would fare in the long run after all the negative comments about Tata in the market.
The car was delivered 34 days after the booking on 9th Sep 2016. Since then I have driven 1292 km. Mileage is 19.2 in Delhi traffic condition. Being a car enthusiast, I drive the car as recommended in the manual and also as advised by Tata Motors guys. Stick to the instant FE, right tyre pressure and gear shifting as indicated in the dashboard. The first service is due in a few days. Expect to see some positive developments.
Tata has to work on the diesel engine clatter externally. It's little noisy in comparison to the Suzuki or Hondas for that matter.The engine noise, however, does not interfere too much inside the cabin, though. The pick up is good and feel like a petrol car in the city mode and once you hit the 1800 plus rpm then Tiago diesel can be really fast and at par with any good car on the road as in acceleration.
The catch here is at Rs. 6.2 lakhs on road price fully loaded top end model of Tiago with alloy wheels you don't even get the basic model of swift /Hyundai Grand i10/ Volkswagon Polo/Ford Figo diesel. Space is more or less the same in all these cars
Other good things/features have already been talked about in other reviews. The eight speaker infotainment is one of the best gadgets in the car. Just awesome. Well, Tata could have provided a larger touchscreen something similar to kwid and may be projector headlamps. But these are the additional wishlist.
I have been driving around a petrol Swift DZire for last 7 yrs and its got excellent driving dynamics. Therefore my concern is how is the Tiago, its service and cost of ownership going to be performing in the years to come.
Last but not the least every car in the market is very competitive and generally very good in terms of the quality. Therefore a lot depends on how we care for it and drive around.
