GLE 2015-2020 250d Review
Mercedes-Benz GLE 250d is a low priced variant in this updated model series, which also comes with the company's new nomenclature – “the GLE”. On the exterior front, a few changes have been made to it. There is a new radiator grille with twin slats that dominates its front facade. It is further made to look attractive owing to the trendy LED headlamps and eye brow shaped DRL's. The tail lamps and bumper are redesigned, while it also gets a sporty exhaust system. Inside the cabin, an advanced infotainment system is incorporated with a large touchscreen display and the air vents now have a classy silver surround. In terms of technical specifications, a 2.2-litre diesel motor powers this robust machine by producing 204bhp along with 500Nm torque output. This comes mated with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission gear box, which helps in taking its performance to the next level.
Exteriors:
This SUV is quite sporty in terms of design, while the external aspects further adds to its overall appearance. The two slat radiator grille at front gets a neat chrome finish. This is further emphasized by the distinctive three pointed star logo in its center. It is flanked by LED high performance headlamps that come with intelligent light system. Also, there are stylish day time running lights, which brings it a visual appeal. Meanwhile, there are two piece LED tail lights and twin exhaust system in its rear end. The windscreen includes a defogger, whereas the roof spoiler is integrated with third LED brake light and has built-in aerial systems. Both the bumpers have under-body protection with chrome finish. On the sides, it has electrically foldable and adjustable outside mirrors, which are heated and have side turn blinkers. The pronounced wheel arches are equipped with a modish set of 18 inch, 7-spoke light alloy wheels. These rims are covered with high performance tubeless radial tyres that deliver exceptional performance on roads.
Interiors:
The enticing attributes inside the cabin is the smooth dashboard, which houses a 3-spoke, multi functional steering wheel that is wrapped with Nappa leather upholstery. It is also mounted with gearshift paddles and twelve function buttons for added convenience. Also, there is an instrument cluster, and glove box integrated to it. A 12V accessory socket is present in the center console as well as the load compartment too. The seats at front are electrically adjustable and has memory function too. Meanwhile, the 60:40 split foldable rear seat comes with angle adjustment facility. The neat “Mercedes-Benz” lettering on door sill panels, ambient lighting and high gloss brown eucalyptus wood finish on dashboard as well as door panels further gives its insides a rich look. A few other elements such as ashtray inserts in the stowage compartment, cigarette lighter, sunvisors with illuminated vanity mirrors, assist grips, and rear armrest including cup holder are also available.
Engine and Performance:
This variant is incorporated with a 2.2-litre, diesel mill that has a displacement capacity of 2143cc. It carries four cylinders that are integrated with 16 valves. A common rail direct injection system supplies fuel to this motor. It can generate a peak power of 204bhp at 3800rpm and yields torque output of 500Nm in the range of 1600 to 1800rpm. This turbocharged oil burner is coupled0 with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission gear box that distributes power to all its wheels. This returns a maximum mileage of about 15 Kmpl, which comes down to approximately 11Kmpl in urban areas.
Braking and Handling:
Both its front and rear wheels are equipped with sturdy disc brakes. The anti locking braking system and brake assist functions further helps in improving this mechanism. In terms of suspension, it gets a selective damping system combined with steel springs. This ensures excellent agility besides enhancing stability on uneven roads. Besides these, it comes with a Direct Steer system that aids in reducing steering movements, while making maneuverability quite easier.
Comfort Features:
The sliding sunroof is one of the best things available in this trim, which lets in cool air and sunlight. The two zone THERMATIC automatic climate control facility aids in controlling better airflow and even allows to set the temperature separately for each side. It has a height and reach adjustable steering column, while the driver's seat gets 4-way lumbar support. A sophisticated audio unit is offered with a 7-inch high resolution display screen. It includes a CD, MP3 player, eight high performance loudspeakers. This unit even supports two USB ports, one SD card slot as well as Bluetooth connectivity. There are all power windows, whereas the windscreen wipers have rain sensors with two sensitivity stages. Other than these, it also has ECO start and stop, EASY PACK load compartment cover, automatically dimming exterior and interior mirrors, green tinted glasses, and a few others.
Safety Features:
This trim is packed with numerous protective aspects like hill start assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, childproofing for doors and windows, ISOFIX child seat attachment points in the rear and electronic immobilizer. Besides these, the list also has PRE-SAFE system with reversible belt tensioners for front seats, electronic stability program, acceleration skid control, crosswind assist, and many more.
Pros:
1. Lavish interiors with several advanced attributes.
2. Numerous security aspects are available.

Displacement The displacement of an engine is the total volume of all of the cylinders in the engine. Measured in cubic centimetres (cc) | 2143 cc |
Max Power Power dictates the performance of an engine. It's measured in horsepower (bhp) or metric horsepower (PS). More is better. | 201.15bhp@3800rpm |
Max Torque The load-carrying ability of an engine, measured in Newton-metres (Nm) or pound-foot (lb-ft). More is better. | 500Nm@1600-1800rpm |
No. of Cylinders ICE engines have one or more cylinders. More cylinders typically mean more smoothness and more power, but it also means more moving parts and less fuel efficiency. | 4 |
Valves Per Cylinder The number of intake and exhaust valves in each engine cylinder. More valves per cylinder means better engine breathing and better performance but it also adds to cost. | 4 |
Valve Configuration Valve configuration refers to the number and arrangement of intake and exhaust valves in each engine cylinder. | DOHC |
Fuel Supply System Responsible for delivering fuel from the fuel tank into your internal combustion engine (ICE). More sophisticated systems give you better mileage. | CRDi |
Bore X Stroke Bore is the diameter of the cylinder, and stroke is the distance that the piston travels from the top of the cylinder to the bottom. Multiplying these two figures gives you the cubic capacity (cc) of an engine. | 83.0 x 92.0 mm |
Compression Ratio The amount of pressure that an engine can generate in its cylinders before combustion. More compression = more power. | 16.2:1 |
Turbo Charger A device that forces more air into an internal combustion engine. More air can burn more fuel and make more power. Turbochargers utilise exhaust gas energy to make more power. | Yes |
Super Charge A device that forces more air into an internal combustion engine. More air can burn more fuel and make more power. Superchargers utilise engine power to make more power. | No |
Transmission Type | Automatic |
Gear Box The component containing a set of gears that supply power from the engine to the wheels. It affects speed and fuel efficiency. | 9 Speed |
Drive Type Specifies which wheels are driven by the engine's power, such as front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive. It affects how the car handles and also its capabilities. | AWD |

Steering Column The shaft that connects the steering wheel to the rest of the steering system to help maneouvre the car. | Height & Reach |
Steering Gear Type Specifies the type of mechanism used to turn the car's wheels, such as rack and pinion or recirculating ball. Affects the feel of the steering. | Rack & Pinion |
Turning Radius The smallest circular space that needs to make a 180-degree turn. It indicates its manoeuvrability, especially in tight spaces. | 5.9 metres Metres |
Front Brake Type Specifies the type of braking system used on the front wheels of the car, like disc or drum brakes. The type of brakes determines the stopping power. | Ventilated Disc |
