The home grown automobile manufacturer Mahindra has silently launched two automatic variants of this muscular sports utility vehicle, Scorpio in the market. One of the trims is christened as Mahindra Scorpio S10 AT 2WD and it has all the features of their top end trim. This vehicle is designed ruggedly for dealing with any terrain. This variant is fitted with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, which has variable geometry turbocharger along with an intercooler. It helps in producing a decent mileage along with power packed performance. This power plant is mated with an all new 6-speed automatic transmission gearbox, which sends the engine power to its two wheels. This latest version comes with a next generation lightweight ladder chassis based on hydroforming method, which contributes towards better handling and drive quality. As far as its interiors are concerned, it comes with a smooth dashboard, which comes with rectangular air vents, a large glove box and so on. The company has also given it a refreshing instrument cluster with contemporary dials along with digital information screen, which keeps the driver updated while driving. Apart from these, it also has a touchscreen infotainment system with display for navigation system. This version also gets a lot of safety aspects like front air bags, ABS with EBD and a state-of-the-art engine immobilizer with encrypted key recognition system for preventing the vehicle from theft and unauthorized entry and so on. This sports utility vehicle faces the likes of Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Chevrolet Tavera, Force One SUV and Tata Safari Storme in the lucrative SUV segment. It is being sold with a standard warranty of two years or 50000 kilometers, whichever is earlier. At the same time, it can be further extended for three years or 75000 kilometers at a nominal cost paid to authorized dealer.
The company has designed this sports utility vehicle on a new ladder chassis, which gives it a completely new look and makes it capable for dealing with any terrain. The overall body structure is quite rugged and its frontage looks bold and aggressive. It is designed with a bold radiator grille, which is fitted with horizontally positioned bars that are done up with a lot of chrome. This grille is flanked by a well designed headlight cluster, which is wider, sleeker and is incorporated with powerful halogen based projector lamps. Just below this, there is a body colored bumper, which houses a large air dam along with air ducts for cooling the powerful engine. This air dam is flanked by a couple of fog lamps that adds to the visibility especially in bad weather conditions. Its stylish bonnet comes with an air vent, which contributes towards engine cooling. The windscreen is made of toughened laminated glass and is pretty large to give a wider view ahead and is accompanied by a couple of wipers with intermittent settings. The side profile is designed with pronounced wheel arches, which are fitted with a set of stylish alloy wheels. Furthermore, its external wing mirrors and door handles have been painted in body color, which gives it a contemporary rook. These ORVMs are electrically adjustable. Its rear end is designed with a radiant taillight cluster, which is equipped with LED brake lights, courtesy lamp and turn indicators. The bumper has an integrated step, which provides an easy access to the rear.
The insides have a dual tone color scheme, that gives the vehicle a decent look. It has a smooth dashboard, which is equipped with quite a few features including an advanced instrument cluster with many functions, a 4-spoke steering wheel with multifunctional switches, AC vents and a large glove box with sun glass holder. In terms of seating, it is incorporated with well cushioned seats that offer ample leg space and shoulder space for all occupants. The seats are covered with premium fabric upholstery, which gives a plus feel while traveling. These are integrated with adjustable head restraints. The 2nd and 3rd row seats have sliding and reclining function, which helps in increasing boot volume. This variant has a huge 460 litre boot compartment, which can be extended further by removing or folding the third row seat. On the other hand, the cabin is incorporated with a lot of utility based aspects like all four power windows with driver side auto down function, electric boot release, cup and bottle holders, cabin lamps, rear center armrest and so on.
Engine and Performance:
This variant is equipped with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that is based on a DOHC valve configuration. It has 4-cylinders and 16-valves that receives fuel through common rail injection system. This petrol power plant comes with a displacement capacity of 2179cc. It can belt out a power of 120bhp at 4000rpm while generating a maximum torque output of 290Nm between 1800 to 2800rpm. This engine is coupled with a six speed automatic transmission gear box that distributes the engine power to its two wheels.
Braking and Handling:
The front wheels are fitted with a set of conventional discs and rear ones are paired with solid drum brakes. It is equipped with ABS that collaborates with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist function. On the other hand, the front axle is assembled with a double wishbone type of system that is loaded with independent coil spring. While its rear axle is fitted with a multi link coil spring with anti roll bar. The cabin is integrated with a power assisted steering system that supports a surprisingly less turning radius of just 5.6 meters.
The cabin is blessed with an automatic air conditioning unit, which also has rear AC vents for cooling the cabin in no time. It is bestowed with an advanced 2-DIN audio system with touchscreen display. It supports CD/DVD player, USB interface and Aux-in port along with Bluetooth connectivity. The printed glass antenna is also given for better reception of FM radio. Apart from these, it also has sophisticated features like micro hybrid technology, Intellipark parking assistance, tyretronics along with light and rain sensors.
The list of protective aspects include high intensity projector headlamps, an engine immobilizer, a high mounted stop lamp, a pair of front fog lamps, centrally located fuel tank, central locking system, tubeless radial tyres and several other. It is also bestowed with airbags for driver and front co-passengers that minimize the impact of collision. The company has given this SUV a rigid body structure that comes with crumple zones and impact beams for ensuring the safety of occupants sitting inside the cabin.

The manufacturer also updated its Mahindra XUV 500 automatic with passive keyless entry and push button start features last month. Earlier in July, a camouflaged Mahindra MPV was spotted testing. It resembled the Scorpio’s front, although, with subtle changes while side profile mimicked the XUV500. It had a new set of headlamps and tail lamps. In addition to the MPV, two new Mahindra Reva vehicles are also expected to make their way in the country by year end.
